Italian researchers recently published a study in Nature Human Behaviour that assessed how early exposure to social media influences academic achievement in children. This investigation linked students' digital footprints with years of standardized test scores to pinpoint when academic disparities began to surface, attributing a possible cause to widespread smartphone usage habits.

The Pervasive Influence of Early Social Media Adoption

The academic world and media frequently debate the implications of children's early use of digital devices, creating uncertainty for parents and educators due to conflicting advice. Many young individuals create social media accounts before reaching the minimum age requirements set by platforms or national laws. Numerous studies indicate a correlation between extensive social media use and negative well-being outcomes, including reduced concentration, poorer sleep quality, and decreased face-to-face interactions.

Detailed Study Design and Data Collection

For this research, investigators analyzed longitudinal academic records to determine the impact of early social media engagement on students' educational results in Italy. The study drew upon data from two sources: the Italian National Institute for the Evaluation of the Education and Training System (INVALSI) and the Early Exposure to Screens and Unequal Performance (EYES UP) project. A web-based survey was distributed to students in grades 10 and 11 in northern Italy during the 2023–24 academic year as part of the EYES UP project.

The survey gathered retrospective information on students' academic progression, the timing of their acquisition and use of digital devices, parental oversight of these devices, satisfaction across various life aspects, and overall subjective well-being. INVALSI gathers standardized data on student achievement through competence tests in English, Italian, and mathematics across different grade levels. The EYES UP survey data were integrated with INVALSI test records, with learning outcomes measured by INVALSI scores in Italian, English, and math examinations.

Categorizing Social Media Users and Longitudinal Analysis

Furthermore, longitudinal data for math and Italian scores from INVALSI were obtained for grades 2, 5, 8, and 10. Students were categorized based on the self-reported grade at which they first established a personal social media account. "Early adopters" were those who created an account in grade 6, 7, or 8, while "late adopters" did so in grade 9 or later. The primary longitudinal analysis included 4,545 students who opened an account after grade 5 and after acquiring a personal smartphone, indicating that the effects of social media and smartphone ownership could not be entirely differentiated. The research team employed a difference-in-differences strategy, combined with statistical matching, to estimate the effects of early social media use by comparing changes in academic performance over time between matched early and late adopters.

Key Findings on Academic Disadvantage

The study encompassed 5,227 students in grades 10 and 11, whose linked academic histories covered grades 2–10, spanning approximately ages 7–16. The average grade for initial video game console use was grade 4. About 47% of students acquired a smartphone in grade 6, and by the end of grade 8, 98% owned one. Additionally, 11.2% of students first joined social media in primary school, 29.5% in grade 6, 25% in grade 7, and 18% in grade 8. Notably, only 16.3% joined social media in grade 9 or later, which generally aligns with Italy's legal minimum age of 14 for independent access.

The duration of social media exposure showed a negative correlation with academic results in both mathematics and Italian. Before statistical adjustments, students with earlier social media exposure tended to come from less educated families and exhibited lower scores on competence tests. The adjusted models estimated that students who created social media accounts in grade 6 scored 0.22 standard deviations lower in Italian in grades 8 and 10, and 0.18 standard deviations lower in math in grade 8 (and 0.27 standard deviations lower in grade 10) compared to late adopters. Students who first opened an account in grade 7 also displayed smaller, yet significant, estimated score deficits. Interestingly, no statistically significant impact of early social media adoption on English proficiency was found; the authors hypothesized this might be due to a significant portion of online content being in English. Furthermore, students who initially created accounts in grades 6 or 7 were more prone to repeating a year in upper-secondary school than late adopters and were less likely to achieve excellent grades by the end of grade 8.

Exploring Mediating Factors and Concluding Insights

Finally, the research team investigated potential mediating factors, such as pervasive smartphone use, parental control, life satisfaction, and parental access to online activities, in relation to the negative link between social media access and academic performance. Increased smartphone ubiquity correlated with lower Italian and math scores by grade 10. Incorporating smartphone pervasiveness into the exploratory models diminished the estimated association by approximately 15%–34% for Italian test scores and 33%–47% for math test scores. Given that data on these potential mediators were not longitudinal, the authors characterized this evidence as exploratory and purely correlational.

Study Limitations and Future Research Directions

Overall, the findings indicate a negative correlation between early social media use and academic performance when compared to later adoption. Students who created social media accounts in grades 6 or 7 consistently demonstrated poorer outcomes across nearly all school-related aspects. These estimated academic disadvantages generally escalated with earlier adoption and persisted or worsened through grade 10. As this was a non-experimental study, its causal interpretation relies on the assumption of parallel trends and the absence of unmeasured time-varying confounders. The timing of social media adoption was also reported retrospectively. The study did not directly quantify social media screen time or the specific content consumed by students. Estimates for grade 8 adoption, particularly for mathematics, proved less resilient to violations of the parallel-trends assumption. The generalizability of the findings is restricted by the sample being exclusively from northern Italy and the exclusion of dropouts, students in short vocational programs, and many students who had repeated multiple grades. Further research is necessary to explore whether early social media exposure influences social relationships and psychological well-being.
