AIA Navigates Market Headwinds: Resilience and Rebound on the Horizon
Third Quarter Performance: Navigating Market Dynamics
AIA Group announced a 5% decrease in its value of new business (VONB) for the third quarter, settling at $1.4 billion, down from $1.5 billion the previous year. This contraction was largely attributed to a weaker showing in the Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland markets, which are typically significant contributors to the insurer's revenue. This downturn comes after an exceptionally strong sales period in these regions during July and August of the preceding year (2025), making the year-on-year comparison particularly challenging.
Positive Momentum: September Rebound and Future Outlook
Despite the quarterly decline, AIA highlighted a significant improvement in September's sales momentum, with year-on-year growth exceeding 25%. This rebound signals a positive trajectory, leading the company to anticipate stronger new business growth in the fourth quarter of 2026. Furthermore, AIA Group remains confident in surpassing its previously announced target of 9% to 11% compound annual growth in operating profit after tax per share between 2023 and 2026.
Nine-Month Overview: Sustained Growth Despite Challenges
For the first nine months of 2026, AIA's VONB saw a 5% increase, reaching $4.6 billion, up from $4.3 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier. This overall growth was bolstered by strong performances across most of its reportable segments, with the exception of Thailand. The combined VONB growth from these other segments reached an impressive 18% in the third quarter, effectively mitigating the declines observed in its two largest markets.
Strategic Strengths: Agent Force and Market Demand
Lee Yuan Siong, Group Chief Executive and President, emphasized the persistent strong demand for a diverse range of insurance products, including protection, health, savings, and retirement plans, across all of AIA's operational markets. He also pointed to the continuous strengthening of the company's agency force, noting increases in active agents, new recruits, and agency leaders. Enhanced engagement with bank partners further solidifies AIA's distribution capabilities and market reach.
Operational Resilience and Market Adaptation
AIA's ability to maintain overall growth despite specific market weaknesses underscores its operational resilience and strategic adaptability. By leveraging diversified market presence and strong distribution channels, the company aims to sustain its growth trajectory and achieve its financial objectives, reinforcing its position as a leading insurance provider in the region.
