Bon Secours Mercy Health, a not-for-profit health system, continues to reap significant financial rewards from its investment in Ensemble Health Partners, a medical billing and collections entity.
Despite having sold majority stakes in its former in-house billing operation to private equity firms several years ago, the health system's minority ownership has generated substantial income, totaling more than $1 billion in the current year alone. This impressive figure far eclipses Bon Secours Mercy's operational earnings for the same period. The financial reports for the second quarter, ending June 30, reveal two major disbursements: a recent payment of $671 million following a change in Ensemble's private equity sponsor, and an earlier distribution of $427 million recorded in February.
This substantial financial influx underscores the strategic foresight of Bon Secours Mercy Health's decision to partner with private equity in its billing enterprise. The continuous stream of revenue from its minority stake demonstrates a successful long-term investment strategy, contributing significantly to the health system's overall financial health and stability. This model showcases how strategic divestments and partnerships can lead to sustained financial benefits for non-profit healthcare providers, potentially allowing them to reinvest in patient care and community services.
