Bungie's Marathon Set for Server Slam and Full Launch

Instructions

After a period of quiet development and a significant delay, Bungie's extraction shooter, Marathon, is finally moving towards its official release with a pre-launch Server Slam event. This upcoming playtest offers players a critical opportunity to experience the game's evolution and provide valuable feedback before its full deployment.

Marathon's Comeback: A Second Chance to Impress

From Early Setbacks to Renewed Hope: Marathon's Journey

Roughly ten months ago, initial impressions of Marathon, alongside Arc Raiders, left much to be desired, prompting a critical assessment that favored its competitor. The subsequent silence from Bungie and a delay until 2026 for Marathon underscored the need for significant adjustments.

The Crucial Server Slam: A Pre-Launch Preview

Now, with its official launch mere weeks away, Marathon is hosting an open Server Slam from February 26 to March 2. This event is strategically timed to precede the game's full release on Thursday, March 5, serving as a final, comprehensive test of its infrastructure and gameplay.

Cross-Platform Accessibility and Progression Rewards

The Server Slam will welcome players across all platforms—PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox—featuring full cross-play and cross-save capabilities. Uniquely, the playtest integrates with Steam Next Fest, an unconventional move for a game on the brink of release. Participants will also benefit from a progression system, allowing certain earned resources to transfer to the main game upon its launch, contingent on player level achievements. These include various implants, Runner shell cores, weapon chip mods, and weapons unlocked at different milestones.

Unlocking Exclusive Rewards: Arrival Caches Explained

Players completing their first mission will unlock the Standard Arrival Cache, containing essential starting gear like six standard implants, four Runner shell cores, six standard weapon chip mods, and two weapons: Overrun and Hardline.

Elevated Experience: The Enhanced Arrival Cache

Reaching Runner Level 10 grants access to the Enhanced Arrival Cache. This includes six enhanced implants, twelve enhanced Runner shell cores (two for each shell), four enhanced weapon chip mods, and two enhanced weapons: the Magnum and Hardline.

Ultimate Gear: The Deluxe Arrival Cache

For those who achieve Runner Level 30, the Deluxe Arrival Cache awaits. This premium collection features a mix of three deluxe and three enhanced implants, twelve deluxe and enhanced Runner shell cores (one of each for every shell), two deluxe and two enhanced weapon chip mods, and a selection of advanced weaponry, including the Deluxe Magnum and Enhanced Volley Rifle, alongside a Deluxe Base Backpack.

A Fresh Perspective: Inviting Players to Re-evaluate

This Server Slam is a direct invitation for the community to engage with Marathon's refined art style and gameplay. It provides an opportune moment for players, particularly those who were initially skeptical about its combat pace and enemy design, to experience the game with an open mind and contribute to its final polish.
