Casio Introduces First Sapphire G-Shock: The MRG-D5000

Instructions

In a significant development for timepiece enthusiasts, Casio has introduced the MRG-D5000, marking the debut of a G-Shock model crafted with a blue sapphire crystal. Sapphire, known for its extreme scratch resistance with a Mohs hardness of 9, typically presents a challenge in terms of impact resilience due to its inherent brittleness. However, Casio's engineers have ingeniously overcome this hurdle by developing a screwless Multi-Guard Structure, allowing for a robust design that can withstand considerable shock, a core tenet of the G-Shock identity. This innovation stems from years of research and development, including a prior concept watch in 2018 that, despite its sapphire case, did not meet G-Shock's stringent shock-resistance benchmarks. The current MRG-D5000 represents a successful realization of this ambitious vision, building upon the Multi-Guard Structure initially seen in titanium on the MRG-B5000 in 2022, and reflecting a journey internally dubbed the "Blue Rose Project," symbolizing the achievement of what was once deemed impossible.

A crucial aspect differentiating this sapphire G-Shock from its predecessors, particularly the titanium MRG-B5000, is the method of assembly. Unlike conventional designs where screws secure components, a common point of weakness in sapphire due to stress concentration around drilled holes, the MRG-D5000's bezel and middle case are assembled entirely without fasteners. Casio's meticulous analysis of impact force distribution through sapphire has been instrumental in engineering this unique structure. While high-end brands like Hublot and Richard Mille have previously explored sapphire cases, often focusing on aesthetic transparency and the complexity of machining, Casio redefines the application by emphasizing shock resistance. Priced around $90,000, the MRG-D5000 is produced in a limited run of 20 units and features a screw-lock caseback with blue sapphire crystal, each engraved with a unique serial number. It is powered by a Gallium Tough Solar module, ensuring efficient charging under varying light conditions, and is presented with a Dura-Soft band in G-Shock's iconic brick pattern, all housed within a custom transparent display box.

Alongside this flagship model, Casio is also releasing two other watches that integrate sapphire in a more decorative capacity. The MRG-B5000SA incorporates two-carat, facet-cut blue sapphire crystals at the top and bottom of its hardened alloy bezel, which, along with the case, is treated with a blue arc ion plating. Limited to 500 pieces, it retails for approximately $7,500. Additionally, the GMW-B5000SB, priced around $900 and limited to 680 units, features four blue sapphire stones on its full-metal bezel, offering a more accessible entry point into the sapphire collection. While these models showcase sapphire as an accent, the MRG-D5000's primary significance lies in its engineering breakthrough: demonstrating that sapphire can indeed be made shock-resistant without traditional screw-based construction. This innovation prompts further inquiry into the industry's testing protocols for shock resistance, particularly given G-Shock's reputation for extreme durability. The true impact of this advancement will be measured by how well this sapphire construction stands up to rigorous real-world evaluations, solidifying its claim as the first shock-resistant G-Shock made from sapphire.
