In January 2022, Baxter faced a significant health challenge with COVID-19, which evolved into a prolonged illness. This period necessitated extensive recuperation, limiting her ability to engage with the heavy equipment and demanding materials that are typically central to her artistic practice. While the sculptures featured in this exhibition were conceptualized five years prior, her journey of recovery, which she regards as a profound blessing, unexpectedly opened new artistic pathways. During this time of enforced rest, she experienced vivid visions that transcended her conventional understanding of both physical and metaphysical spaces.
Hearts of Crystal: Manifestations of Emotion and Spirit
Among Baxter's works, human heart forms burst forth with crystalline structures, evident in pieces like “The Day I Tried to Live” and “Fade Into You.” These sculptures can be interpreted in multifaceted ways: they might symbolize an internal hardening or crystallization of emotions and biological processes, or, conversely, represent a magnificent outpouring of the spirit, made tangible through glistening growth. “Fade Into You” features a functional hinge, allowing the artwork to be presented as “open-hearted” or, when closed, to contain its radiant inner essence.

Baxter remarks, “The women depicted in these sculptures strive to maintain an elevated consciousness, yet they frequently experience fragmentation and dissolution.” She explains that these works draw inspiration from her appreciation for the history of sculpture, ranging from ancient Greek busts to the masterpieces of Bernini, alongside her fascination with the intrinsic properties of materials and her unwavering belief in the inherent power and intuitive wisdom of women.

Artworks such as “Veil” subtly reference the very nature of perception and awareness, while simultaneously acknowledging the delicate boundary separating our physical existence from the spiritual realm. The gallery notes, “Life acquired an extraordinary degree of permeability for her, in a manner more spiritual and profound than ever before, leading her to feel as though she was beginning to embody the mystical concepts she had been earnestly researching.”
