Just last month, the 37-year-old Cousins and the Falcons had revisited the terms of his substantial four-year, $180 million agreement. This adjustment was designed to provide the Falcons with greater financial maneuverability under the salary cap. Crucially, it also established a deadline of March 13, the third day of the 2026 NFL league year, for a definitive decision regarding Cousins' continued tenure with the Atlanta franchise.
Significant Salary Reduction in Modified Deal
The revised contract saw a dramatic decrease in Cousins' 2026 base salary. His previously non-guaranteed $35 million was slashed to a mere $2.1 million. This substantial $32.9 million difference was subsequently added to his 2027 salary, indicating a clear shift in the financial commitment from the Falcons for the upcoming season.
Cousins' Contractual Protections and Future Uncertainty
Despite the significant changes, Cousins retains a no-trade clause in his contract, offering him some control over his destination should a trade opportunity arise. Furthermore, he is still guaranteed a $10 million roster bonus for the 2026 season. As for his future, ESPN reports that Cousins has not dismissed the idea of playing in the upcoming season. However, after 14 seasons in the NFL, a potential pivot to television commentary has emerged as a viable option, especially following his recent appearance on CBS's pregame show during the postseason.
Falcons' Quarterback Landscape Remains Undecided
Meanwhile, the Falcons have not yet committed to Michael Penix Jr. as their starting quarterback. Penix, who sustained a torn left ACL in November, faces a recovery period of nine to twelve months. Despite this, he has expressed confidence in recent interviews that he expects to be ready for the season opener in September. Atlanta's president of football operations, Matt Ryan, has clarified that no position is set and that the front office is engaged in extensive discussions regarding the entire roster.

A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Cousins demonstrated solid performance in his previous season.
