The 2026 Electrek Formula Sun Grand Prix officially began its first day of competition at the Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minnesota. This marks the first time this prestigious solar car race has been hosted on the 3.1-mile road course, historically known for traditional combustion engine vehicles. The transition highlights a growing recognition of sustainable transportation technologies in mainstream motorsport venues.

Unprecedented Participation and Environmental Challenges Faced by Competitors

This year's Grand Prix boasts the largest number of registered teams in its history, with a remarkable 39 participants. Out of these, 15 teams successfully navigated the stringent "scrunteering" safety checks, earning their place on the starting grid for day one. The day was not without its environmental challenges, as competitors contended with significant crosswinds exceeding 16 mph. These gusts either aided the solar cars by pushing them from behind or increased drag when faced head-on, adding an extra layer of complexity to the race.

Leading the Pack: Stellar Performances in SOV and MOV Categories on Day One

In the Single-Occupant Vehicle (SOV) category, École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) from Quebec, Canada, demonstrated exceptional prowess, securing the top position with an impressive 112 registered laps. ÉTS also recorded the fastest lap of the day, completing the 3.1-mile track in a rapid 3:31:00, averaging nearly 53 mph. Meanwhile, in the Multi-Occupant Vehicle (MOV) class, Georgia Tech set a strong pace, achieving 77 laps and establishing a significant 22-lap lead over Appalachian State, which managed 55 laps. MIT currently holds third place with 3 laps, with expectations for improved performance in subsequent days. Iowa State, Minnesota, and Polytechnique Montréal are yet to register scoring laps. Appalachian State, despite trailing in total laps, recorded the fastest individual lap in the MOV class with a time of 4:24, surpassing Georgia Tech's 5:04.
