Hyundai is taking a deliberate and methodical approach to autonomous driving technology, announcing a delay in the full deployment of its proprietary advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS), Atria AI, until 2029. This strategic postponement, extending two years beyond original timelines, reflects the automaker's commitment to delivering a superior and thoroughly refined product rather than rushing a subpar Level 2++ system to market. In the interim, Hyundai plans to roll out an Nvidia-powered Level 2 system in its vehicles by 2028, setting the stage for its more advanced in-house solution.
The South Korean automotive giant's strategy for autonomous driving unfolds in two distinct phases. The initial phase involves integrating an Nvidia-based Level 2 system into its vehicles, which is anticipated to begin deployment by 2028. This collaboration with Nvidia leverages a robust and proven platform to provide supervised driving assistance. Simultaneously, Hyundai is intensifying its in-house development efforts for the Atria AI system, a Level 2++ offering designed to compete directly with sophisticated systems like Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised).
Park Min-woo, who leads HMG's advanced vehicle platform division, articulated the rationale behind the delay, stating, "We made a strategic decision to slow down." He emphasized the risk of introducing a "middling Level 2++" system if hurried, underscoring Hyundai's ambition to achieve a truly advanced solution. With an annual sales volume of 7 million vehicles across 190 global markets, Hyundai possesses a vast trove of driving data. This extensive data, coupled with a focused development cycle, is expected to accelerate the refinement of their technology, positioning them to potentially outpace competitors in the race for automotive autonomy. Indeed, the global automotive industry is fiercely competing to develop vehicles capable of independent navigation, braking, and steering, recognizing the potential for enhanced safety and new revenue streams.
Hyundai recently showcased the capabilities of its current Level 2+ ADAS in a demonstration featuring an Ioniq 5 navigating the intricate urban environment of Seoul's Gangnam District. This display highlighted the system's proficiency in handling complex traffic scenarios under human supervision. Production vehicles equipped with this Level 2+ system are slated for release in the latter half of 2028. This rollout aims to standardize software and hardware across Hyundai and Kia models, as well as their robotaxi and autonomous vehicle software divisions, Motional and 42dot. The Nvidia Drive Hyperion 10 architecture will underpin the first phase of these systems, which supports various levels of autonomy, including supervised Level 2 and unsupervised Level 4, utilizing cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar, with the potential for lidar integration in future Level 3 systems, akin to Mercedes-Benz's approach with its MB.Drive Assist Pro.
The introduction of Hyundai's Atria AI autonomous driving system in the latter half of 2029 marks the culmination of the second phase. Described as a "Level 2++" system, Atria AI represents a significant leap in capability for supervised driving assistance, placing it between standard Level 2 and fully autonomous Level 3 according to SAE International's classifications. This end-to-end system leverages an AI model to process sensor data and generate driving commands, directly challenging Tesla's FSD (Supervised). Junghyun Kwon, head of HMG’s autonomous driving development center, highlighted that competitiveness in autonomous driving hinges on the rapid connection of data to learning, validation, and performance improvement. Through a sophisticated data flywheel system, Hyundai anticipates continuous enhancements and swift technological progress. Beyond passenger vehicles, Hyundai's autonomous ambitions encompass humanoid robotics through Boston Dynamics and the deployment of Ioniq 5 robotaxis in Las Vegas via its Motional division by year-end. Furthermore, Hyundai is supplying Ioniq 5 robotaxis to Waymo, with these vehicles expected to join Waymo's fleet in the near future.
