A new entrant to the world of horology, Independent Atelier, has unveiled its debut creation, Project Tai Yu. This isn't just another watch release; it's a profound homage to the legacy of Kiu Tai Yu, a figure revered among collectors and independent watchmakers. Instead of following conventional paths, the atelier chose to delve into the past, specifically celebrating the contributions of China's first member of the esteemed Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI).
Independent Atelier's Project Tai Yu: A Deep Dive into a Watchmaking Legacy
Founded by Benjamin Hui, Independent Atelier is not a typical brand but rather a collaborative platform aimed at supporting niche, research-driven projects that might not align with traditional commercial frameworks. Project Tai Yu serves as its cornerstone, stemming from Hui's more than decade-long quest to unearth and comprehend Kiu Tai Yu's unique creations. His journey led him to acquire two of Kiu Tai Yu's timepieces, including a rare Millennium watch, which became the blueprint for Project Tai Yu. This endeavor, undertaken in collaboration with young Chinese watchmaker Zhang YuXin, involved meticulously studying the original Millennium movement. Their objective was not mere reproduction but a comprehensive understanding of its design philosophy and construction, revealing Kiu Tai Yu's advanced thinking and reliance on handcrafted components.
The resultant IATY-01 movement maintains the aesthetic integrity of the original while incorporating discreet enhancements for modern-day reliability and performance. Minor adjustments were made to the escapement, balance shaft, shock protection, regulator, and hairspring, ensuring the watch remains wearable and maintainable without sacrificing its historical essence. Visually, Project Tai Yu stays true to its inspiration. The dial design, inscriptions, and typography echo the original Millennium watch, featuring a Suzhou-style time display that blends traditional and simplified Chinese characters with Roman and Western Arabic numerals. The case, crafted from 18K yellow gold, measures 35mm in diameter, 46mm lug-to-lug, and has an 11.2mm profile, complemented by sapphire crystals on both sides. A black and red Jeayou leather strap with cold-enamel detailing on the buckle completes this limited edition of 25 pieces, priced at CHF 30,500.
