January 2026 Watch Highlights: A Curated Selection of Timepieces

Instructions

This report introduces a novel series dedicated to spotlighting the most remarkable timepieces launched each month. For January 2026, we present five exceptional watches that have defied expectations, demonstrating that the year's commencement in the watch industry is far from sluggish. These selections range from cutting-edge designs and sophisticated movements to rare material applications, setting an exciting tone for the upcoming year in watchmaking.

Unveiling January's Pinnacle: Five Extraordinary Timepieces

The Iconic Reimagined: Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch “Reverse Panda”

Our initial choice for January 2026 is an undeniable standout. While it may not be everyone's immediate pick for a Moonwatch, this "Reverse Panda" iteration has certainly ignited significant discussion. We had the privilege of examining both the stainless steel and Moonshine Gold variants, and their undeniable appeal is truly best appreciated in person. Despite a superficial resemblance to the 2017 Speedy Tuesday limited edition, a direct comparison reveals their distinctiveness, particularly the striking new glossy dials. My initial reservations dissolved upon experiencing these watches firsthand; their impact on the wrist was profoundly impressive.

The Art of Distinction: Crafting Unique Timepiece Identities

The journey begins with the instantly recognizable 42mm asymmetrical Speedmaster Moonwatch case, characterized by its distinctive lyre lugs. Nestled within is a luminous black dial adorned with lustrous white sub-dials. This dial is intricately constructed from two layers: an upper polished black layer, featuring a varnished and lacquered finish alongside rhodium-plated sub-dial bezels, and a pristine, varnished, and lacquered white base layer that also forms the sub-dials. Consequently, the main dial's minute track is white, while the sub-dials' markings are black, ensuring optimal readability through stark contrast. As highlighted by Robert-Jan, the dial boasts an astounding twenty layers of lacquer, a testament to its meticulous craftsmanship.

Exquisite Enhancements: Elevating the Moonwatch Aesthetic

Encircling the dial is a black ceramic bezel insert, meticulously detailed with a tachymeter scale that proudly features the classic Dot Over Ninety (DON) marker, all elegantly filled with white enamel. This thoughtful pairing of the bezel insert with the radiant glossy dial imparts a truly distinctive character to these new Moonwatches, setting them apart from any existing models. Both versions are also complemented by the exceptionally comfortable "Nixon" bracelet, which flawlessly completes their refined appearance.

Precision and Power: The Heart of the Modern Speedmaster

A sapphire display on the case back offers an unobstructed view of the intricate caliber 3861 movement within. This manual-winding Master Chronometer movement operates at a steady 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides a robust 50-hour power reserve. It has proven to be a highly dependable power source for contemporary Speedmaster Moonwatch models, affirming its continued use. In essence, the two new "Reverse Panda" models left a profound impression. The stainless steel variant is widely favored and likely the more sought-after option. While its €10,200 price point sparked considerable debate, there's no denying that this new Speedy stands as a quintessential highlight of January 2026.

A Distinctive Craft: Atelier Wen Millésime Perception Xuán

Our second selection offers a stark contrast. While sharing the principle of an innovative dial, the Millésime Perception Xuán by Atelier Wen transcends a simple dial change. The brand's Perception series has earned considerable acclaim within the horological community. This contemporary sports watch, with its exceptionally comfortable integrated bracelet, possesses an instantly recognizable aesthetic and a devoted following. We've witnessed numerous impressive dial variations, often masterpieces crafted by China's sole guilloché expert, Cheng Yucai.

The Mesmerizing Allure of Pietersite: A Unique Dial Experience

However, for this particular Millésime Perception Xuán limited edition, the brand opted for a distinctive pietersite dial. As Mike elaborated, this material is technically chalcedony, a form of silica. Its origin in China influenced its selection for this exclusive series of dials. Due to its natural composition, each dial exhibits a singular appearance. Pietersite typically showcases a captivating blend of blues and browns, often accented by chatoyant yellow tones. The model we observed featured a magnificent interplay of blues and browns. Yet, given the inherent uniqueness of each dial, one might encounter a predominantly blue dial with an intriguing pattern or an even more exotic spectrum of colors. The universal appeal lies in their striking visual charm.

Crafted for Comfort and Visual Splendor: The Millésime Perception Xuán Experience

The exquisite dial is housed within the familiar 40mm 904L stainless steel case, which boasts a slender 9.4mm profile and a 47mm lug-to-lug measurement. A double-domed sapphire crystal, treated with ten layers of antireflective coating, safeguards this exceptional dial, ensuring an unhindered appreciation of its natural beauty. Surrounding the pietersite is a luminous huiwen-patterned chapter ring, which also securely holds the hour markers. A closer inspection of the specially crafted cutouts for the indexes reveals the meticulous effort invested in creating these dials.

The Reliable Heartbeat: Powering the Perception Series

The timepiece is powered by the Chinese Dandong SL1588A self-winding caliber, partially visible through the artfully decorated case back. This movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a 41-hour power reserve. It has consistently proven to be a highly dependable caliber for the Perception series, a key reason for its continued adoption by the brand.

A Vision of Stone: The Enduring Appeal of Atelier Wen's Latest Creation

This timepiece thoroughly captivated the Fratello team during its time in our office. The remarkable pietersite dial is truly captivating, and we eagerly anticipate more watches from Atelier Wen featuring such unique stone dials in the future. Currently, the Millésime Perception Xuán stands as a testament to this vision and is available for pre-order at €3,100 (excluding taxes).

Haute Horlogerie Unveiled: Louis Vuitton Escale Minute Repeater

Approximately two weeks prior, Louis Vuitton presented a series of remarkable new releases from its watch division during LVMH Watch Week 2026 in Milan, Italy. Louis Vuitton's focus was on its Escale collection, with the Escale Minute Repeater emerging as the undeniable highlight for most observers. This jump-hour watch, featuring a minute repeater elegantly housed in a stunning 40 × 12.3mm pink gold case and adorned with a breathtaking traditional guilloché dial, was an instant sensation. As Lex elucidated, the assembly and finishing of a single Escale Minute Repeater demand over four weeks of dedicated effort, a fact clearly evident upon examining its intricate details.

A Masterpiece on the Wrist: Louis Vuitton's Horological Innovation

Among the Fratello team, Daan, who attended LVMH Watch Week, confirmed the exceptional nature of this timepiece, sparking a collective desire to experience it firsthand. This creation stands as another testament to the ingenuity of Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, a duo responsible for a string of remarkable releases in recent years. Interestingly, my personal favorite remains last year's Gérald Genta Geneva Minute Repeater, which shares a similar complication.

Intricate Mechanics and Artistic Finesse: The Louis Vuitton Escale Minute Repeater's Design

However, for this latest Escale Minute Repeater, the duo embarked on a distinct creative path. The 432-part caliber they developed seamlessly integrates a prominent jump-hour display at 6 o'clock with a retrograde minute track positioned along the dial's periphery. At the commencement of each hour, the retrograde minute hand gracefully resets to zero, a fluid motion facilitated by an integrated damping system that meticulously regulates its movement. The breathtaking dial, handcrafted on a rose engine, showcases a radiant flammé guilloché pattern that is truly exceptional. Subtle yet impactful details on the dial evoke Louis Vuitton's iconic trunks, such as the bracket-inspired minute track adorned with nail-like markers. In its entirety, this new Louis Vuitton Escale Minute Repeater serves as a magnificent demonstration of watchmaking excellence, brimming with intricate, brand-specific elements, solidifying its place among the standout releases of the past month.

A Fusion of Innovation and Artistry: Toledano & Chan B/1.3r

Another prominent release, introduced just last week, is the Toledano & Chan B/1.3r. This iteration is a fresh take on the brand's inaugural model, with Phil Toledano and Alfred Chan introducing significant enhancements. The new B/1.3r is crafted from lightweight titanium, offering a substantial reduction in weight compared to its predecessors. Furthermore, the darker hue of the titanium case beautifully complements the 18K yellow gold ripple dial. This specific color combination is, in my opinion, the most compelling from the duo to date. An additional exquisite detail is the refined brushed finish on both the titanium case and bracelet, which adds depth and visual brilliance.

Architectural Precision and Striking Details: The Essence of the B/1.3r

But the innovations certainly don't end there. The striking asymmetrical destro-style case is subtly narrower than previous B/1 versions, enhancing its wearability. What remains consistent, however, is the captivating sculptural quality of the case, paired with a stunning faceted sapphire crystal. These elements imbue the brutalist-architecture-inspired timepiece with a singular presence. Two impeccably sharp hands gracefully indicate the time over the dial, while the word "Swiss" is laser-engraved into the crystal, adding another layer of exquisite detail. Ultimately, this is a remarkable creation that evokes strong reactions, whether admiration or disdain.

Ergonomic Design and Unmistakable Presence: The B/1.3r's Wearability

Beneath the surface, the watch is powered by the Sellita SW100 movement. This 25-jewel automatic caliber operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and boasts a 42-hour power reserve. Its ease of servicing and inherent reliability make it an ideal choice for this timepiece. However, it's important to note that the movement itself isn't the primary draw for this particular watch.

A Unique Blend of Comfort and Luxury: The Toledano & Chan B/1.3r Experience

The distinctive sculptural design of the case and bracelet creates a remarkably comfortable wearing experience. I had the pleasure of wearing it for a week while preparing the review, and I was genuinely impressed. Despite its angular form, the watch is surprisingly easy to wear, and thanks to its titanium construction, one sometimes barely notices its presence. Yet, the captivating blend of the gold dial and unique sculptural elements constantly provides a visual reminder of the special timepiece adorning your wrist. As I noted in my review, this US$10,200 watch easily stands as one of my early favorites for 2026.

A Surprising Gem: Tiffany & Co. Tiffany Timer

Our final selection, the Tiffany & Co. Tiffany Timer, was an unexpected but delightful revelation during LVMH Watch Week. This timepiece elegantly commemorates the brand's pioneering chronograph from 1866. The Tiffany Timer is a classically styled chronograph, housed in a 40mm platinum case, featuring a white gold crown and chronograph pushers on the right side. The case is perfectly complemented by a Tiffany Blue lacquer dial, adorned with twelve baguette diamonds serving as hour markers.

The Exquisite Details: A Dial of Precision and Luxury

Additionally, it features three sub-dials, with all text and markings rendered in crisp black. The date display includes a perfectly color-matched disc with black printing, ensuring a seamless integration. Lastly, the finely crafted hands are all made of white gold, harmonizing beautifully with the crown and pushers. As evident, the dial boasts considerable depth and intricate details that contribute to its striking appearance.

The Art of Time: Crafting a Visually Stunning Dial

The creation of each dial is an intensive process, requiring an impressive 50 hours of dedicated craftsmanship. The dial's base surface undergoes eight meticulous applications of matte Tiffany Blue lacquer, followed by a two-hour drying period in an oven maintained at a precise temperature. Subsequently, the dials receive fifteen layers of clearcoat, which are carefully air-dried under controlled conditions. This intricate process highlights the time-consuming nature of its production. Yet, the journey doesn't conclude there; in the final stage, each dial endures a twelve-hour baking process.

The Masterful Movement: Zenith El Primero and Tiffany's Unique Touch

Upon turning over the Tiffany Timer, one discovers a bespoke iteration of the renowned Zenith El Primero caliber 400. This legendary chronograph movement operates at 36,000 vibrations per hour and offers a 50-hour power reserve. A particularly captivating detail is the customized rotor, which features an 18K yellow gold Bird on a Rock, a significant emblem in Tiffany's rich history, as Lex detailed. As indicated on the case back, Tiffany & Co. produced only 60 pieces of this exquisite chronograph, which have undoubtedly sold out. Its appeal is unequivocally understood.
