Andrea Kimi Antonelli, representing Mercedes, displayed a commanding performance during the second practice session of the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix. He outpaced Ferrari's Charles Leclerc on Friday afternoon, navigating the warm and formidable Madring circuit with remarkable skill.
Early Pace and Track Demands
Antonelli secured his fastest lap approximately midway through the one-hour session as teams and drivers diligently fine-tuned their car setups on the exceptionally challenging Madrid track. The 5.4km circuit, a unique blend of urban segments and a purpose-built section featuring numerous high-speed turns, proved difficult to master from the outset. Given the minimal run-off areas, teams adopted a cautious approach in the initial practice, prioritizing driver familiarity and rhythm over immediate lap times.
Soft Tyre Strategy and Antonelli's Dominance
As the session progressed into its latter half, most drivers switched to the faster soft-compound tyres. These tyres presented a significant challenge, as maintaining optimal temperature proved difficult due to the sustained lateral forces exerted on the Pirelli rubber. Antonelli, the championship leader, once again set the benchmark with a lap time of 1m33.662s. George Russell, his teammate, couldn't immediately match this pace, while Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc secured second and third positions respectively. Notably, Arvid Lindblad from Racing Bull initially impressed by slotting into fourth place.
Lindblad's Incident and Session Interruption
However, Lindblad's promising run was cut short when he collided with the barriers at Turn 13, a medium-speed left-hander. Lindblad emerged from the incident unscathed, but the session was red-flagged with 25 minutes remaining as track marshals worked to repair the TecPro barrier. This interruption prevented any further significant improvements at the top of the leaderboard, solidifying Antonelli's leading position ahead of the Ferrari duo of Leclerc and Hamilton.
Notable Performances and Setbacks
Following Lindblad, who finished fourth despite his crash, Russell and Verstappen claimed fifth and sixth places. Oscar Piastri was the highest-placed McLaren driver in seventh, marking a challenging day for the reigning world champions. Piastri's teammate, Lando Norris, was forced into the garage after completing only two laps due to a gearbox issue, necessitating a replacement by McLaren. Yuki Tsunoda, making his third appearance of the season for Racing Bulls, finished eighth. Haas driver Esteban Ocon and Red Bull's Liam Lawson rounded out the top ten. Local favorites Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso had a subdued start, finishing 16th and 17th respectively, with Alonso experiencing a delayed start due to a clutch problem on his Aston Martin.
