Instructions

In an exciting collaboration, Hodinkee and Porsche Design have reintroduced a horological icon: the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition. This timepiece is the culmination of over four years of extensive research and development, bringing back the revered central minute chronograph functionality of the historic Lemania 5100 movement. It stands as a testament to the enduring principles of utility, precision, and robust design, drawing inspiration from the original Porsche Design military chronographs. This exclusive release underscores a shared commitment to crafting instruments that prioritize function and clarity, embodying a philosophy where every element serves a distinct purpose.

The journey to revive this classic began with Hodinkee's profound appreciation for iconic design, especially the synergy between Porsche's automotive excellence and the meticulous art of watchmaking. The first chapter of their collaboration focused on the aesthetic heritage of the Chronograph 1. Now, the spotlight shifts to the mechanical heart of this defining instrument. The central-minute chronograph, a feature absent from production for two decades, makes a triumphant return, revitalizing a beloved design that captivated air and naval forces in the late 1970s.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the visionary behind the Porsche 911, established a design philosophy rooted in uncompromising functionality. In 1972, he extended this ethos to Porsche Design, where the Chronograph 1 emerged as the world’s first matte-black chronograph. Its design mirrored the high-contrast clarity of a Porsche dashboard, with every component meticulously engineered for purpose. This rigorous approach led to military commissions for a Chronograph 1 that was legible, dependable, and serviceable in extreme conditions—a blueprint that inspired this latest limited edition.

The core of this revival is the WERK 01.340 movement, a new development that meticulously rebuilds the Lemania 5100's functionality. This isn't merely a re-issue; it's a modern reinterpretation engineered for superior precision and reliability, qualities the original could only aspire to. The movement incorporates a central seconds hand, a central minutes hand, and a 12-hour subregister at 6 o'clock, all unified by a distinctive red colorway and a 12-hour chapter ring.

Significant enhancements have been made to improve accuracy. The central chronograph minute hand is positioned as close to the dial as possible to minimize parallax effect, ensuring immediate and precise elapsed time readings. Furthermore, the chronograph minutes mechanism now features a jumping increment, solidifying accuracy. The movement also includes a 24-hour subregister for AM/PM indication, dual-language day and date functions with a modernized quick-set, and an increased power reserve of over 60 hours. COSC certification further guarantees its consistent accuracy.

The watch's design echoes the movement's logic: pure utility. The 40.8mm bead-blasted titanium case, left uncoated for a soft gray finish, provides unmatched durability and lightness, reflecting Porsche's lightweight construction philosophy. The solid caseback features custom engravings and explicitly highlights the WERK 01.340 and "CENTRAL STOP MINUTE." The dial maintains historical proportions and typeface, with a subtle "Ti" marking the titanium construction and "Porsche Design for Hodinkee" under the date window. Water-resistant up to 100m, it comes with both a titanium bracelet and a classic leather bund strap made from original Porsche vehicle leather, ensuring both operational capability and wearing comfort.

This limited edition, with only 350 pieces available globally at $9,650 USD, is handcrafted at Porsche Design's manufactory in Grenchen, Switzerland. The first 100 pieces are exclusively available through Hodinkee and Watches of Switzerland. This release celebrates not just a watch, but a philosophy of engineering excellence and unwavering utility, demonstrating that robustness, rather than mere aesthetic appeal, remains paramount.
