Sleep Unveils New Music, Lineup Changes, and Fall Tour Dates

Instructions

Iconic stoner and doom metal band Sleep has finally released new material after an eight-year hiatus, debuting the track "Have Spacesuit Will Travel." This new offering, available through Third Man Records, will also be featured as a flexi disc in a special bundle for the band's new comic book, Sleep Comic Book. Written by frontman Al Cisneros and illustrated by Dave Kloc and Arik Roper, the comic book marks an innovative expansion of the band's universe.

Alongside the new music, Sleep announced significant changes to its lineup. Al Cisneros continues as the band's vocalist, bassist, and primary songwriter. Guitarist Matt Pike, a co-founder and a cornerstone of Sleep's sound, has departed the group, making 2018's The Sciences his final studio appearance with them. Bubba Dupree, known for his work with the Maryland hardcore punk band Void, is stepping in on guitar, while Dale Crover of Melvins will take over drumming duties, following Jason Roeder's return to Neurosis. The band's press release indicates a forward-looking approach: “The music and art are alive and after the decades of obstacles that Sleep has overcome, it is time to move forward and make songs and albums. Al wishes Matt the best on his earth bound maneuvers.”

The Sleep Comic Book, starting with Issue #1, introduces readers to the adventures of the Marijuanaut, who journeys to Planet Iommia, encounters The Weedian, and explores Iommia’s profound spiritual practices, drawing from the lyrical narratives embedded in Sleep's discography. Fans can purchase a standard edition of the comic or a limited-edition bundle that includes the comic, a full cover poster, a signed bookplate, custom rolling papers, and the "Have Spacesuit Will Travel" flexi disc. Furthermore, Sleep is embarking on a North American tour this fall, commencing on September 8 in San Diego and concluding on November 17 in Washington, D.C., with a stop at Austin's Levitation music festival. The tour will cover various major cities across the United States and Canada.

This renewed artistic output and tour signify Sleep's enduring commitment to their craft and their audience. Despite changes in personnel, the band demonstrates resilience and a vibrant creative spirit, continuing to evolve while honoring their foundational influences. Their journey exemplifies how art, through music and storytelling, can transcend obstacles and embrace new expressions, inviting fans to explore expanded realms of sound and narrative.
