This project meticulously preserves aspects of the original structure while introducing contemporary extensions, each thoughtfully designed to harmonize with the local vernacular through distinctive forms, textures, and functions. Fonolleres, a small community encircled by fruit orchards, boasts a consistent material palette, predominantly ochre hues derived from indigenous stone and pottery. The renovation embraces this chromatic heritage, translating the village's architectural essence into a modern system of independent modules.
The expansion strategically arranges itself around a primary dwelling, augmented by individual components such as a covered patio, an entry area, an outdoor cooking station, and a shaded arbor. This design philosophy mirrors the organic growth of traditional village homes, which have evolved through successive additions over time. Each new element is distinguished by its geometric shape and material application; for instance, the patio features seven wooden archways extending over the existing swimming area, while the outdoor cooking space presents a triangular form set against the building's facade. The entrance gracefully glides over the main structure, and the arbor stands as a separate circular element offering respite from the sun. Despite their individual expressions, these additions collectively forge a cohesive material language. Natural timber and earthenware are seamlessly integrated with the stucco finish of the central building, with the ceramics fired in a wood-burning oven to achieve a tone that resonates with Fonolleres' signature aesthetic.
The Barcelona-based architectural duo's vision also heavily relies on the strategic use of shade, transforming it into a fundamental environmental and spatial feature. Tailored for the Mediterranean climate, various outdoor constructions provide graded levels of sun protection throughout the day, effectively extending the home's functional areas beyond its enclosed confines and fostering a deeper connection between indoor and outdoor living. A generous covered patio creates an expansive shaded zone, allowing interior activities to spill into the garden and offering a cool retreat adjacent to the pool. The outdoor cooking area's configuration, height, and placement ensure shade during peak midday hours, aligning with typical usage patterns. Furthermore, a circular arbor offers additional shade over the outdoor dining table, perfect for morning meals. Circular canopies above the terrace provide localized shade for the upper-level bedrooms and transform into illuminated features in the evening, prolonging the enjoyment of outdoor spaces. Internally, more secluded functions are situated within the main volume's extension, with a study and library on the ground floor and the principal bedroom above. These areas cater to the owner's passions for music and literature, linked by a double-height triangular void behind the bed, which also houses a compact reading nook connected to the library.
