A New Era Dawns for the Los Angeles Angels
Kroenke Sports & Entertainment's Major League Baseball Entry
Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE) has officially declared its plan to acquire a majority stake in the Los Angeles Angels from long-standing owner Arte Moreno. This landmark agreement, poised for finalization in early 2027, is contingent upon receiving the necessary endorsements from Major League Baseball and its collective ownership.
Setting a New Financial Benchmark in Baseball
Reports from the Los Angeles Times indicate that the purchase price for the Angels will eclipse the record-setting $3.9 billion paid for the San Diego Padres earlier this year. While the precise figure remains undisclosed, this transaction, which received preliminary approval from league owners in August, significantly surpasses the $183.5 million Moreno invested in the team back in 2003.
The Extensive Sports Portfolio of Stan Kroenke
Under the leadership of Stan Kroenke, KSE boasts an impressive array of professional sports franchises. This includes the NFL's Los Angeles Rams, the NBA's Denver Nuggets, the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, and MLS's Colorado Rapids. Beyond North American sports, KSE also owns Arsenal FC, a prominent club in the English Premier League, and an associated women's soccer team, in addition to a professional lacrosse team based in Colorado.
Kroenke's Visionary Developments in Southern California
Kroenke's influence extends to major real estate and entertainment ventures, notably the development of a 300-acre complex in Inglewood, California. This sprawling facility houses the state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium, a monumental project costing over $5 billion that opened its doors in 2020. This venue is not only the home of the Los Angeles Rams but is also slated to host its second Super Bowl at the conclusion of the upcoming NFL season, as well as events for the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
Moreno's Legacy and the Angels' Recent Struggles
Arte Moreno's tenure, which began in 2003, saw him become the first Mexican American to own a major U.S. sports franchise. He took the reins a year after the Angels secured a World Series title under Disney's ownership. While the team initially enjoyed success, reaching the playoffs five times in Moreno's first seven years, their postseason appearances have dwindled to just one in the subsequent 16 seasons, with no playoff victories in that period.
Unfulfilled Potential: The Trout and Ohtani Era
Despite the presence of superstar talents like Mike Trout, who has been with the team since 2011 and is a 12-time All-Star, the Angels have largely failed to achieve consistent postseason success. Trout's only playoff experience was a sweep in 2014. The formidable duo of Trout and Shohei Ohtani, who played together for six seasons and collectively earned five MVP awards while with the Angels between 2014 and 2023, also never managed to lead the team to the playoffs. In 2018, Ohtani was crowned American League Rookie of the Year, with Trout finishing as MVP runner-up.
Fan Discontent and the Call for Change
Growing frustrations among the Angels' fanbase have become increasingly visible. During games this season, groups of disgruntled fans have been observed engaging in protests, often in the upper deck, vocally demanding that Moreno sell the team, among other chants. This reflects the team's ongoing struggles, as they currently face their eleventh consecutive losing season, with a record of 53-85 going into Tuesday's MLB play.
Statements from the Owners Regarding the Transaction
Kroenke expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, "The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market. We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization." Moreno also commented on the sale in a news release, remarking, "The Angels Organization is pleased to announce this transaction with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years and we believe with KSE's experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise. The Angels Organization looks forward to continuing its commitment to the fans, our employees, the players and our business partners." Moreno had previously considered selling the team in 2022 but abandoned the plan less than a year late
