The Texas A&M track and field contingent kicked off their indoor season with a commanding display, earning numerous accolades and setting new benchmarks at the recent Corky Classic held in Lubbock. Their stellar performance included a haul of 19 medals, a remarkable 39 finishes within the top ten, and the establishment of three new university records, signaling a strong start to the competitive year.
Following their exceptional efforts, two standout athletes from Texas A&M received recognition from the Southeastern Conference. First-year student Lily Carlson was honored as the SEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week. Carlson not only secured victory in the pole vault event but also shattered the previous Texas A&M indoor record with her impressive clearance. Additionally, sophomore Lawson Jacobs was named the SEC Men's Runner of the Week, thanks to his gold-medal winning performances in both the 400-meter race and as the anchor in the 4x400-meter relay team.
Carlson's record-breaking pole vault mark reached 4.41 meters (14 feet, 5.5 inches), positioning her third nationally and as the top-ranked freshman in the event. Jacobs's 400-meter time of 45.37 seconds stands as the second-fastest in the nation for the current season. His pivotal role in the 4x400m relay saw him deliver the fastest split of any competitor, clocking in at 45.35 seconds, which propelled the relay team to the second-best national ranking.
The team is set to continue its indoor campaign on January 25, when they will host the Ted Nelson Invitational at their home facility, the Fasken Indoor Track & Field.
