Transforming a Georgian Home's Kitchen for Modern Family Life

Instructions

A Georgian-style residence in East Glenview, Illinois, offered a young couple and their three sons an idyllic setting, yet its kitchen presented a significant challenge. The existing layout was inefficient, appliances were outdated, and storage was notably lacking, making it unsuitable for the daily demands of a bustling family of five. Recognizing the potential for transformation, interior designer Elizabeth Smolcich of Mason & Brass embarked on a comprehensive renovation. The homeowner, Marie Gould, shared her family's need for a highly functional and child-friendly environment, a vision Smolcich enthusiastically embraced and brought to life.

The redesign prioritized enhanced connectivity and functionality. A key modification involved widening the passage between the kitchen and living area, enabling Marie to supervise her young children while preparing meals. A cramped corner booth, which hindered movement and offered insufficient seating, was removed to facilitate the installation of a larger, centrally located kitchen island. This expansive island, topped with elegant smoky quartzite, now provides ample space for meal preparation and allows the children to engage with kitchen activities. Above it, schoolhouse-style fluted glass pendants were chosen for their classic appeal. A significant and adaptable feature is the custom banquette, seamlessly integrated with the island, yet movable to accommodate larger gatherings. Complementing these design elements, the kitchen is equipped with a double oven and a sophisticated SKS range, boasting rapid preheating and induction cooktop capabilities for safety and efficiency, satisfying the family's passion for cooking and entertaining.

The thoughtful design extends to every detail, ensuring maximum utility and aesthetic appeal. Dual SKS dishwashers are strategically placed between the main and prep sinks, while a pantry wall, painted in Benjamin Moore Black Iron, provides extensive storage. An appliance garage discreetly houses small kitchen electronics, and a dedicated beverage bar with a 24-inch refrigerator keeps children's drinks readily accessible. Amidst these modern conveniences, a cherished framed photograph of Gould's parents and oldest son baking, alongside a handwritten banana bread recipe, symbolizes the heart of the home. As Smolcich aptly notes, the renovation successfully transformed a once restrictive space into a vibrant family hub, a place where the boys will soon tackle their homework, reinforcing the kitchen's role as the central gathering place for the Gould family.

This kitchen renovation exemplifies how thoughtful design can profoundly impact daily family life, fostering an environment that is both highly practical and deeply personal. By addressing specific needs with innovative solutions and a keen eye for detail, the project not only created a beautiful space but also strengthened the home's role as a nurturing and inspiring haven for its inhabitants.
