Commanders Cement Commitment to Pro Bowl Punter
Washington Retains Punting Veteran with New Agreement
The Washington Commanders have officially announced a contract extension for Tress Way, their celebrated punter. This agreement ensures that the team will retain the services of one of the league's most reliable specialists. The deal, structured for a single year, reflects a similar arrangement from the previous offseason, indicating the organization's ongoing trust in Way's capabilities as he approaches his 36th birthday.
From Undrafted Prospect to Franchise Cornerstone
Tress Way initially entered the National Football League in 2013 as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Oklahoma. After a brief stint with the Chicago Bears, he found his long-term home with Washington in 2014. Since then, Way has consistently demonstrated elite performance, maintaining an impressive average of 46.9 yards per punt and a net average of 41.7 yards over his extensive 12-season career. His remarkable contributions have earned him three Pro Bowl selections and a second-team All-Pro honor in 2019, solidifying his status as a franchise cornerstone.
Exemplary Performance on the Field
The 2025 season saw Way continue his exceptional form, delivering an average of 47.3 yards per punt and a net average of 43.9 yards. His precision was particularly notable, with only four of his 56 punts resulting in touchbacks. Furthermore, an impressive 29 punts, accounting for 51.9% of his total, were strategically placed inside the 20-yard line, showcasing his unparalleled control and skill.
Leadership and Community Engagement Beyond the Game
Beyond his athletic prowess, Tress Way has been a prominent leader within the Commanders organization. For many years, he served as a team captain, a role that saw a shift to weekly rotations upon head coach Dan Quinn's arrival in 2024. Way's influence extends beyond his consistent play; he is highly regarded by his teammates and actively participates in community initiatives, embodying the values of a true professional athlete and role model.
