Type 2 Diabetes May Worsen Menopause Symptoms

Menopause symptoms, including their type and intensity, vary considerably among individuals. Previous research has explored several factors contributing to these variations. A new investigation suggests that type 2 diabetes mellitus could significantly intensify both the number and severity of menopausal symptoms. These findings have been published in the journal Menopause.

As women approach midlife, hormonal shifts associated with menopause increase their susceptibility to various chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes. This period often sees weight gain and a redistribution of fat, particularly around the abdomen, which raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Globally, diabetes prevalence was estimated at 10% in 2024, with the risk increasing with age.

Earlier studies have identified a strong, interconnected relationship between menopause and the onset of diabetes, with early menopause and the postmenopausal stages acting as contributing factors. However, much of this research has focused on the stage, age, or timing of menopause, rather than directly evaluating the burden of menopausal symptoms. This new study, involving nearly 300 women aged 40 to 64, sought to assess menopausal symptoms using the Midlife Women's Symptom Index and to determine if type 2 diabetes is associated with the frequency and severity of these symptoms. The research revealed that women with diabetes experienced a higher incidence of menopausal symptoms across all stages, with a statistically significant difference observed specifically in the postmenopausal phase. Similarly, while symptom severity was consistently elevated in diabetic groups throughout menopause, a statistically significant distinction was primarily noted in the postmenopausal stage.

These findings emphasize the critical need to incorporate menopause symptom evaluation and treatment into diabetes care for women in midlife to enhance their overall well-being. Further long-term studies are advised to more clearly define the biological and psychological pathways linking glucose metabolism with the intensity of menopausal symptoms in this demographic. This integrated approach ensures that women receive comprehensive care, addressing both diabetes and menopausal health, thereby improving their quality of life and managing associated cardiovascular risks effectively.
