2027 Land Rover Defender: Enhanced Performance and New Vertex Edition Unveiled

Instructions

The Land Rover Defender, a flagship SUV for JLR, is set to receive a substantial refresh for its 2027 model year. This update introduces the sleek Vertex model, broadens customization possibilities, and discontinues the previous standard 296-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. These changes aim to bolster the Defender's appeal, especially among consumers who value both rugged capability and luxurious refinement.

2027 Land Rover Defender: Key Enhancements and Pricing Details

For the 2027 model year, the Land Rover Defender lineup undergoes significant changes to its powertrain and trim offerings. Most notably, the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which previously came standard, has been phased out. In its place, a robust 3.0-liter inline-six engine, producing 296 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque, is now standard across all Defender body styles, except for the high-performance Octa variant. The more powerful 395-horsepower turbo six remains available, though the status of the supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 is currently uncertain as it is not listed on the consumer site.

A significant addition to the Defender family is the new Vertex trim. Positioned similarly to the 90-series' X trim, both priced at $90,450, the Vertex distinguishes itself with unique front and rear bumpers. Its lower body section is color-matched to the vehicle's main body, moving away from the previously common black accents. Design elements such as a rear spoiler, yellow-painted tow hooks on the rear bumper, and matching front brake calipers visible through new 22-inch wheels, lend the Vertex a distinctive and sporty appearance. A similar aesthetic is also offered on the X-Dynamic SE trim (available for 110 and 130 series) through the new Extended Exterior Pack, though without the color-matched lower section.

Interior versatility sees an improvement with the introduction of a new six-seat configuration for the Defender 110. This $1350 option features second-row captain's chairs and a two-person third row, creating a 2+2+2 seating layout. Land Rover has also expanded the exterior color palette, reintroducing Namib Orange, a popular shade from the 2020 Defender. The Octa model now includes Woolstone Green as a color option, and all exterior finishes can be further protected with a new $5450 Gloss Protective Film, an upgrade from the previously matte-only option.

Pricing for the 2027 models starts at $62,950 for the entry-level Defender 90 S, with the Vertex trim topping out at $90,450. The Defender 110 and 130 models begin at $66,950 and $75,950, respectively, with their Vertex versions priced at $97,950 and $106,950. The flagship Octa commands a starting price of $160,750, with fully equipped models potentially exceeding $186,000. Additionally, Land Rover offers an extensive array of factory-installed options, such as the new $760 Tail Door Gear Carrier and $3610 Expedition Roof Light, alongside existing Adventure, Explorer, and Urban packages, allowing for deep personalization and further increasing the total cost.

The 2027 Land Rover Defender represents a thoughtful evolution of an already iconic SUV. The strategic shift in powertrain to a more powerful and efficient inline-six, combined with the introduction of the visually striking Vertex trim and enhanced customization options, positions the Defender to maintain its leading edge in the luxury SUV market. These updates not only elevate the driving experience but also reinforce the Defender’s reputation as a versatile vehicle capable of tackling both urban environments and adventurous escapes. The expanded seating options further cater to a broader range of buyers, making the Defender an even more compelling choice for those seeking a blend of performance, luxury, and utility.
