The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced its newest cohort of members, welcoming 529 individuals from across the globe, including celebrated actors, prominent executives, and visionary artists from various cinematic fields.
This year's invitees represent a conscious effort to enhance diversity and global representation within the Academy. Of the new members, 42% are women, 56% come from underrepresented communities, and 53% are based outside the United States, spanning 60 different countries. This brings the total membership to 11,319, with 10,338 eligible to vote, signifying a significant step towards a more inclusive and representative film industry. Noteworthy additions include actors Jacob Elordi, Teyana Taylor, Bill Skarsgard, Jenna Ortega, and Josh O’Connor, alongside Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro, filmmakers Benny and Josh Safdie, and award-winning casting director Cassandra Kulukundis.
The selection process for Academy membership is rigorous, relying on sponsorship rather than application. Executive committees from each of the Academy’s 19 branches, along with one membership classification, identify deserving candidates. These recommendations then undergo review by the membership committee before receiving final approval from the board of governors. This structured approach ensures that new members are recognized for their exceptional contributions and commitment to the art of filmmaking. Several individuals, such as Ronald Bronstein and the Safdie brothers, received invitations across multiple branches, highlighting their versatile talents and profound impact on various aspects of cinema.
The expansion of the Academy's membership reflects a commitment to fostering a more inclusive and globally representative cinematic landscape. By embracing a wide array of talents and perspectives, the Academy continues to strengthen its role in shaping the future of film, promoting creativity, and celebrating the diverse stories that enrich our world. This move ensures that the voices and artistry of filmmakers from all backgrounds are recognized and empowered, contributing to a vibrant and evolving global film community.
