In a pioneering move to enhance the traceability of packaging materials, Aldi and Arla Foods UK have embarked on an eight-week pilot scheme. This initiative, undertaken in conjunction with the recycling technology firm Polytag, employs ultraviolet tags to track milk bottles as they navigate the recycling infrastructure.
The trial involves the application of imperceptible UV tags to wrap-around labels on Arla's milk bottles produced at its Oakthorpe dairy. These specialized labels, manufactured by Saica Flex, incorporate a food-safe fluorescent ink developed by Sun Chemical. Upon reaching material recovery facilities, Polytag’s detection systems will scan these tags, capturing real-time, barcode-level data. This information will then be accessible to Aldi and Arla via Polytag’s online dashboard, offering invaluable insights into recycling performance and the lifecycle of the bottles. This current project builds upon a successful initial trial in 2023 that utilized pressure-sensitive labels, with the new wrap-around labels offering superior resilience and coverage.
This collaborative effort aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of how dairy packaging moves through the waste management and recycling chain. The data gathered during this pilot will be instrumental in evaluating packaging effectiveness and identifying future opportunities to boost recyclability and overall recycling volumes. This innovative partnership underscores a shared commitment to fostering greater transparency across the packaging value chain, ultimately contributing to a more circular economy.
This initiative represents a proactive step towards a sustainable future, where advanced technology and inter-company cooperation drive environmental responsibility. By precisely tracking packaging, companies can make data-driven decisions that reduce waste, optimize resource utilization, and build a more circular system, benefiting both the environment and consumers.
