Thriving Returns Fuel Reinsurance Capital Growth
Sustained Investor Confidence in ILS Market Performance
The robust profitability demonstrated by the insurance-linked securities (ILS) sector over recent periods has solidified investor confidence, prompting many to either maintain or expand their financial commitments. This sustained interest has led AM Best, a prominent rating agency, to highlight the increasing significance of external reinsurance capital as a vital component of the worldwide reinsurance market’s capacity.
Expansion and Projections for Third-Party Reinsurance Capital
As previously noted, AM Best, in collaboration with reinsurance brokerage Guy Carpenter, has revised its projections for third-party reinsurance capital. The revised estimate for the close of 2025 now stands at $123 billion, an increase from the earlier $120 billion forecast. Furthermore, the outlook suggests continued expansion, anticipating this figure to reach $130 billion by the conclusion of 2026.
Growing Momentum in the Catastrophe Bond Sector
The upward trend in third-party capital is primarily propelled by a substantial demand for catastrophe bonds and other forms of insurance-linked securities. The catastrophe bond market, in particular, has experienced remarkable growth over the past year. Following an unprecedented $25.6 billion in 144A issuance during 2025, the first half of 2026 maintained this exceptional pace, setting a new record with nearly $18 billion in issuances. This surge has elevated the total value of outstanding catastrophe bonds to an all-time high of approximately $65.6 billion by the end of June.
Attractive Returns and Diversification Benefits Drive ILS Inflow
AM Best further explains that the ILS market has greatly benefited from the inflow of capital seeking appealing risk-adjusted returns and the inherent diversification advantages that insurance risk offers. The strong market performance has also facilitated the re-allocation of investor funds. The profitable returns generated by the ILS market have not only encouraged existing investors to sustain or augment their allocations but have also successfully attracted new capital to the sector. Consequently, third-party capital continues to solidify its position as an increasingly indispensable element of global reinsurance capacity.
Resilience and Growth Across the Reinsurance Market
The expansion within the ILS market mirrors the broader resilience observed in the reinsurance sector. AM Best's analysis indicates that the global reinsurance market commenced 2025 from a position of considerable financial strength, continuing to accumulate capital throughout the year. Both traditional reinsurance and third-party capital achieved record levels. Traditional reinsurers experienced another year of strong underwriting and investment earnings, enabling them to retain capital even while distributing funds to shareholders and pursuing new growth opportunities. Concurrently, the ILS market persisted in drawing investors keen on exposure to insurance risk, which typically exhibits a low correlation with wider financial market fluctuations.
Strengthening Partnerships with Alternative Capital Providers
AM Best also recently highlighted that reinsurers are experiencing advantages from the maturing collaborations with alternative capital providers. These partnerships are instrumental in assisting reinsurers to consistently surpass their cost of capital, indicating a synergistic relationship that benefits both traditional and alternative capital segments of the market.
