The Ancient Allure: Anoma's Vision for the A1 Prehistoric
Independent watchmaker Anoma delved into the distant past to conceptualize its latest offering. The new A1 Prehistoric model transforms the brand's distinctive triangular watch into something reminiscent of an archaeological find. Rather than pristine industrial finishes, it features intentionally irregular, hand-chiseled surfaces. This design is a homage to prehistoric stone implements and the raw, unrefined creative marks left by early artisans, celebrating imperfection as a form of skilled artistry. It marries precise Swiss mechanical engineering with techniques more commonly found in sculpture than in traditional watchmaking.
The Uniqueness Embodied: A Five-Hour Hand-Finishing Ritual
The genesis of this project can be traced to Anoma founder Matteo Violet Vianello's visit to the Centre Pompidou's exhibition honoring Constantin Brâncuși. There, the sculptor's collection of prehistoric hand axes, arrowheads, and rudimentary tools sparked a fresh interpretation for the A1. Instead of merely replicating ancient forms, the watch captures their tangible essence—the rugged textures, visible marks of tools, and surfaces that distinctly convey the human touch in their creation.
Each 316L stainless steel case undergoes an approximate five-hour individual hand-chiseling process by French engraver Steven Brunel, whose work has been showcased at the Louvre. This method doesn't aim to hide the manufacturing process; instead, it ensures that every case possesses its own distinct pattern of facets, grooves, and subtle imperfections. The matching pin buckle receives the same detailed treatment, guaranteeing that no two watches are exactly alike.
The Dial's Story: Engraved Echoes of Weathered Flint
The dedication to handcrafted detail extends to the watch's dial, where approximately 600 individual lines are meticulously engraved by hand onto a brass blank. This is then treated with a deep anthracite finish, evoking the appearance of ancient, weathered stone. This, combined with the textured steel case and a monochromatic color scheme, gives the watch the appearance of a discovered archaeological treasure, all while maintaining the elegant proportions of Anoma's original sculptural design. Its asymmetrical, lugless case measures 39 by 38 millimeters, yet its compact geometry and inwardly curved profile make it feel closer in size to a conventional 37-millimeter watch.
Beneath this expressive exterior, the watch's mechanics remain deliberately straightforward. It houses a Swiss automatic Sellita SW100 movement, offering a 38-hour power reserve and 50 meters of water resistance. A gray Italian leather strap complements the design, ensuring the textured case remains the central focus. The Anoma A1 Prehistoric is a limited edition of 100 pieces, with orders commencing on July 8, 2026, and deliveries anticipated in October of the same year.
