Apparatus Unveils "Act V: Afsaneh" Collection Inspired by Persian Mythology

Instructions

Five years following its previous launch, Apparatus is embarking on a significant new phase. The New York-based design studio has unveiled "Act V: Afsaneh," a collection of lighting, furniture, and objects deeply rooted in Persian mythology, personal narratives, and the inherent cyclical nature of existence. Conceived by artistic director Gabriel Hendifar, this collection honors his mother while delving into the concept of the divine feminine as a wellspring of creativity, wisdom, and rejuvenation.

The collection draws its name, "Afsaneh," from its dual significance: it translates to "fable" in Persian and is also the name of Hendifar’s mother. This double meaning provides the conceptual framework for a modern fable, unfolding through four interconnected chapters that chart a journey from creation to connection. Each chapter is named after a Persian word and delves into a distinct phase of life’s cycle. "Esfand: The Seed" signifies origins, fertility, and protection, drawing from the 12th month of the Persian calendar and a seed believed to ward off the evil eye. "Gol: The Flower" illustrates growth and transformation, utilizing molded fiberglass to craft delicate, membrane-like surfaces. The collection’s narrative then shifts with "Rahvi: The Serpent," symbolizing the pursuit and transmission of knowledge through water-formed brass, blown glass, and various semi-precious stones acting as protective amulets. The final chapter, "Jahaan: The World," extends the narrative outward, focusing on community and shared experiences, blending bronze and aluminum with cast glass to evoke cosmic connections.

Throughout "Act V," Apparatus pushes its signature materials in innovative directions. Brass, glass, and bronze remain foundational, yet techniques such as water-forming and fiberglass molding introduce new possibilities for form, surface, and dynamic expression. The resulting pieces fluently transition between architectural precision and organic fluidity, with curves, suspended structures, and layered materials visually embodying the collection’s rich symbolism. This collection ultimately explores the profound interplay between creation and experience. While its objects are imbued with references to mythology, memory, and the natural world, their significance is fluid. Like the fable that inspired them, these pieces are designed to integrate into the unfolding stories around them, becoming living parts of each unique human experience.
