Apple's Assurance on Device Functionality Amidst Lease Agreements

Apple has officially stated that it will not impose any restrictions on the functionality of devices leased through its new Upgrade program, regardless of whether payments are missed. This commitment aims to provide peace of mind to users, ensuring their devices remain fully operational.

Addressing Speculation: iOS 27 Code and "App Managed Features"

Earlier reports, stemming from an analysis of iOS 27 beta code, suggested the potential for a new “App Managed Features” system. This system was believed to enable financial partners to monitor device status and potentially trigger a “Restricted Mode” on Apple devices if users fell behind on payments. This mode would have severely limited app access, allowing only essential functions such as Phone, App Store, Clock, Settings, and Wallet.

Partnership with Klarna and Consequences of Default

The Apple Upgrade program operates in collaboration with Klarna, a 'buy now, pay later' service. This partnership allows customers to lease various Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches, through a fixed monthly payment plan without interest. Klarna has clarified that while device functionality will not be curtailed by Apple, customers who miss three consecutive payments will face the termination of their lease agreement, making the entire outstanding balance immediately due.
