Bangkok's newest luxury destination, The Norm, redefines the rooftop bar experience by placing an unprecedented emphasis on interior design and guest comfort. Located 42 stories high in the Central Park Offices, this sophisticated venue showcases over a hundred exquisite pieces from Fritz Hansen, transforming the traditional high-altitude drinking spot into a sanctuary of sustained relaxation and elegant interaction. The visionary behind The Norm, Turk Sitthan, prioritized the seating experience, believing that exceptional furniture forms the foundation of an inviting space, a philosophy brought to life by EKAR Architects' golden-hued interiors.
The concept for The Norm originated from the owner's profound appreciation for classic Fritz Hansen designs. Unlike many establishments where furniture is an afterthought, here, the iconic pieces, particularly Arne Jacobsen's 'Swan' and 'Egg' chairs, served as the primary inspiration for the entire architectural framework. These chairs, typically found in corporate lobbies, were strategically chosen to encourage guests to linger, interact, and immerse themselves in the ambiance, providing both comfort and a unique sense of occasion.
Dario Reicherl, CEO of Asia at Fritz Hansen, highlighted the unusual yet impactful approach of this project. He noted that the owner's clear vision to build the space around the furniture's inherent comfort and aesthetic appeal was central to its success. The design intentionally slows down the pace, inviting patrons to enjoy extended stays in an environment that delicately balances intimacy with openness.
Spanning an expansive 1,200 square meters, The Norm's interior is a masterpiece of design, where every element contributes to a cohesive and welcoming atmosphere. Upon entering, guests are immediately drawn to the striking inverted-gable light tunnels crafted from warm-toned timber, creating a visually captivating effect that leads the eye upward. The bar strategically incorporates diverse areas, from cozy indoor nooks and sheltered outdoor lounges to expansive terraces, each offering a distinct mood complemented by a curated cocktail menu.
The design principles of legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, particularly his concepts of compression and release, are subtly echoed throughout the space. As guests navigate from the interior towards the open-air terraces, a breathtaking panoramic view of the Bangkok skyline gradually unfolds, creating a dramatic and memorable transition. The chosen color palette further enhances the inviting atmosphere, with a focus on warmth and restraint. Materials like timber and complementary leather tones were selected not only for their tactile qualities but also for their ability to gracefully mature over time, ensuring a timeless aesthetic rather than chasing ephemeral trends.
Since its grand opening in February 2026, The Norm has demonstrated how thoughtfully selected furniture can subtly influence human behavior. High-backed chairs like the 'Egg' provide private retreats, while more open seating arrangements foster social interaction. This intelligent layout guides guests intuitively, allowing them to naturally find spaces for lingering, gathering, or passing through, without the need for explicit signage. This distinct approach sets The Norm apart from many of Bangkok's rooftop bars, which often prioritize vast outdoor spaces with minimal indoor engagement. The Norm, while offering stunning views from the 42nd floor, is fundamentally an interior-led experience, encouraging guests to settle in and savor their time.
