Sebastián Múnera's first feature film, 'Meteorite' (Meteorito), is poised to make its global premiere at the Venice Critics' Week on September 8th, promising a compelling cinematic experience. The narrative centers on Tefa and Nia, who reside in a modest community adjacent to the Magdalena River. Their journey begins as Nia convinces Tefa to assist in discreetly transporting mobile phones into a nearby correctional facility. This illicit endeavor takes an unexpected turn as their path leads them through an amusement park, remarkably constructed on the former property of a notorious drug lord, featuring attractions like water slides and dinosaur sculptures.
The film delves beyond the seemingly lighthearted amusement park setting to explore deeper themes. A synopsis hints at an underlying tension, stating, 'In an environment where aggression lurks beneath the surface, Tefa is drawn towards an unavoidable confrontation.' Múnera explains his inspiration for this unusual juxtaposition, recalling his childhood visits to a place called Nápoles in central Colombia during the late 1980s and early 1990s. This location, once home to Colombia's first safari-style zoo, left a lasting impression. Years later, while conducting academic research on animality and cinema, Múnera revisited the site, only to discover that the zoo had been redeveloped into a theme park, with a maximum-security prison built adjacent to it. He observed families enjoying the park alongside women and children visiting incarcerated relatives, a striking contrast that ignited the film's central idea. The film features performances by Ángela Cano, Luna Gaviria, Esteban Madrigal, Jesús Gutierrez, and Jaime Castaño.
Múnera co-wrote the screenplay with Martha Márquez, with Arlene Muller serving as cinematographer and Rodrigo Ramos Estrada as editor. The production team includes Sebastian Martinez and Mauricio S.
