Unearthing Zwan's Hidden Gems: A New Era for Unheard Music
The Genesis of Zwan: A Post-Pumpkins Project
Following the initial disbandment of Smashing Pumpkins in 2001, Billy Corgan embarked on a new musical journey, forming the supergroup Zwan. This collective featured a stellar lineup including drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, guitarist Matt Sweeney, and bassists David Pajo and Paz Lenchantin. Their unique sound quickly captivated audiences, though their time together was brief but impactful.
"Mary Star of the Sea": A Singular Masterpiece and Beyond
Zwan's discography boasts only one official album, "Mary Star of the Sea," released in 2003. This record, known for its lead single "Honestly," quickly garnered critical acclaim before the group dissolved later that same year. Despite their short tenure, the band left behind a significant catalog of unreleased music, much to the anticipation of their dedicated fanbase.
Corgan's Revelation: Over 60 New Tracks Unveiled
In a recent video discussion with Stereogum, Corgan shared thrilling details about his plans to formally release more than 60 unreleased Zwan compositions. He confirmed that these tracks will undergo a comprehensive remixing and remastering process, ensuring a high-quality listening experience. The collection will feature not only material from their sole album but also two additional LPs worth of never-before-heard recordings.
A Strategic Release Plan: Addressing the Extensive Catalog
Acknowledging the vast quantity of Zwan's unreleased work, Corgan explained his decision to issue the material in multiple, distinct sets. This approach aims to prevent an overwhelming, excessively long box set, making the music more accessible and manageable for fans. He emphasized that these are entirely new songs, not merely alternative versions, highlighting the band's prolific songwriting during their active period.
Current Ventures: Smashing Pumpkins' Continued Journey
Since Zwan's conclusion, Corgan reunited with Smashing Pumpkins in 2006, with Jimmy Chamberlin rejoining the band until his departure in 2009. The Smashing Pumpkins have remained active, releasing their 13th album, "Aghori Mhori Mei," in 2024. The same year also saw the introduction of Kiki Wong as the band's new guitarist, following a nationwide search for talent.
Recent Performances and Upcoming Engagements
Corgan has been actively performing, recently joining Sombr at their Coachella debut to play tracks like "Speed" and "1979." The Smashing Pumpkins are also scheduled to perform at a Fourth of July benefit concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, with proceeds supporting Feeding America. Looking ahead, the band will embark on the "Rats in a Cage Tour" this fall, celebrating their iconic 1995 album, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness." Corgan expressed his excitement about creating a special show around the enduring themes of this landmark record, a concept he has long envisioned.
