The #ShePaddles event in Pangbourne, orchestrated by Amie and Jade from Adventure Dolphin, successfully gathered over 60 women, offering them a unique opportunity to deepen their skills and build connections in the paddlesport community. Driven by a desire to see more women in the sport, Amie, a lifelong paddler, initiated the event to counter the male-dominated environment she often encountered. She aimed to create a supportive space where women could find mentors and friends, thereby expanding their networks beyond the event itself. Jade, though not a daily paddler, shared this vision, emphasizing the importance of visibility and creating welcoming environments to inspire younger generations of girls to participate and thrive in paddlesports. Their collective effort brought together female coaches who led workshops across various disciplines, fostering confidence and encouraging shared experiences.
The day itself was a vibrant display of camaraderie and skill development, marked by high energy from beginning to end. With 50 women participating in full-day workshops and an additional 12 joining for afternoon taster sessions, the event was a resounding success. Participants enthusiastically engaged in sessions ranging from introductory race kayaking, where many experienced a race kayak for the first time, to rescue techniques tailored for female paddlers, and sea kayak navigation. The workshops were designed to be both theoretical and practical, allowing women to refine existing skills or bravely try new ones, with a strong emphasis on mutual encouragement and overcoming challenges in a fun, supportive setting. Feedback underscored the inclusive nature of the event, with many praising the knowledgeable coaches and the flexible approach that catered to diverse skill levels.
The triumph of the #ShePaddles Pangbourne event was a testament to the dedication of its organizers and the invaluable contributions of a passionate team. Amie and Jade extended their gratitude to key supporters, including Ed from Go Kayaking for providing demo boats, which enriched the participants' experience by allowing them to try various watercraft. They also thanked Nicole Turley for capturing the day's essence through her photography and, most importantly, the inspiring female coaches—Sarah Keight, Chloe Smith, Laura Wayne, Emma Love, Cheryl Williams, Lucy Bryant, Phoebe Harbridge, and Lucy Downing—whose expertise and encouraging spirit brought the vision to life. This successful gathering not only provided a platform for skill enhancement but also reinforced the growing community of women in paddlesports, with plans already underway for #ShePaddles 2027 to return to Pangbourne, promising more opportunities for growth, connection, and empowerment.
This initiative exemplifies the profound impact that dedicated individuals can have in fostering inclusive environments and empowering communities. By creating spaces where diverse groups can connect, learn, and grow, we not only celebrate individual achievements but also cultivate a collective spirit of encouragement and support. Such efforts are crucial in breaking down barriers and ensuring that everyone, regardless of background, has the opportunity to pursue their passions and realize their full potential, contributing to a more vibrant and equitable society.
