Former Formula 1 race engineer Rob Smedley believes George Russell's current struggles in the 2026 title race stem from overthinking. Smedley, during a recent podcast appearance, emphasized the importance of a 'flow state' for peak performance, contrasting Russell's approach with that of his Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli. He asserts that while Russell's driving ability is undeniable, his mental approach is hindering his championship aspirations.
During a discussion on the 'High Performance Racing' podcast, alongside former Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer and broadcaster Jake Humphrey, Smedley provided insights into the dynamics within the Mercedes team. He highlighted the increasing points difference between Russell and Antonelli, attributing Antonelli's success to his ability to operate in a 'flow state'.
Smedley explained, "You've got to be in a flow state, right? This is where Kimi is right now. Kimi is in a flow state, and he's just doing it very, very naturally. When he gets in the car, he delivers, doesn't overthink. Therefore, he doesn't overdrive, and it's just happening for him." He further elaborated on Russell's situation: "You can't be overthinking it. And if I observe George from the outside and listen to what's going on as well, I think that he is overthinking it, quite frankly."
Smedley stressed that Russell's raw talent is not in question. "There's no doubt, and this is a message for George. There's no doubt you can drive a grand prix car. There's absolutely no doubt in the world. Whether or not Kimi's a tenth faster or a tenth slower is irrelevant, right? He has to get his head in order because that's where the lap time and the points and this world championship is now, not in his driving."
Russell had a strong start to the season, winning the Australian Grand Prix and the Chinese sprint race, positioning him as a strong contender for the 2026 title. However, a series of strong performances from Antonelli, coupled with some unfortunate incidents for Russell, have seen Antonelli build a significant lead in the championship standings. Antonelli currently holds 219 points, with seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in second with 169 points, and Russell in third with 160 points after the first half of the season.
Ultimately, Smedley’s analysis suggests that for George Russell to close the gap to his teammate and compete for the championship, he must focus on refining his mental approach, allowing his natural talent to shine through without the burden of excessive thought. This internal adjustment, rather than a change in driving technique, is seen as the key to unlocking his full potential and reclaiming his competitive edge in the tightly contested Formula 1 season.
