The San Diego Padres released a statement acknowledging awareness of the situation, stating, "We recently became aware of the detainment of minor league catching coordinator Oswaldo Pirela in El Paso, Texas. We are working to gather additional information and will not have any further comment at this time." Pirela, a Venezuelan national, originally joined the Rangers in 2009, spending three seasons in the Dominican Summer League before concluding his professional playing career. He maintains a batting average of .212 over 79 games, primarily as a catcher and first baseman. Despite a search, no matching records for Pirela appeared in the ICE database as of Tuesday morning.
Pirela's brother, Jorgi Heli Pirela, expressed strong sentiments on Instagram, asserting his brother's innocence: "My brother is not a criminal. He is a son, a brother, a coach, a worker and a man who came to this country seeking protection after our family suffered persecution in Venezuela."
