Global Art Showcase at The Shed
Frieze New York's 2026 edition promises a compelling exhibition with 67 galleries representing 26 nations. Scheduled from May 13th to May 17th at The Shed in Hudson Yards, the fair will commence with exclusive VIP previews on May 13th and 14th. While the number of participating galleries is slightly fewer than the 2025 event, the lineup includes major international names such as Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, Pace Gallery, Perrotin, Thaddaeus Ropac, Esther Schipper, White Cube, and David Zwirner, ensuring a high-caliber presentation of contemporary art.
The fair will also welcome back several galleries after a brief absence, including Daniel Faria Gallery, P420, Almine Rech, Galerie Eva Presenhuber, and Marc Selwyn Fine Art. Numerous New York-based galleries, such as Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, Canada, Chapter NY, and James Cohan, will also be present, highlighting the city's robust art scene. Christine Messineo, Frieze’s Director of Americas, emphasized the fair's role in reflecting the most engaging artistic endeavors within a city renowned for its dedication to rigor, complexity, and ambition, extending its influence beyond the venue into the wider urban landscape through collaborations with local institutions focusing on time-based media and performance.
Emerging Talents in the Focus Section
The highly anticipated Focus section, dedicated to solo presentations by young galleries, will once again be curated by Lumi Tan for the third consecutive year. Tan, celebrated for her work as senior curator at The Kitchen and her recent involvement with the Luna Luna revival, brings her insightful vision to this segment of the fair. More than half of the 11 participating galleries in Focus will be making their debut at Frieze, including Campeche, Europa, Isla Flotante, Sargent’s Daughters, Soft Opening, Ulrik, and W-galería.
Returning galleries to the Focus section include Central, Champ Lacombe, Gordon Robichaux, and Public Gallery. Tan expressed her excitement about the diverse range of media and cultural narratives presented within this section. She specifically highlighted solo presentations that demonstrate how both established and emerging artists are committed to "world-building," envisioning new structures and forms to address significant themes. These topics span from overwhelming global challenges like ecological devastation and urban spectacle to more personal and intimate subjects, such as the profound relationship between a mother and child, offering a rich tapestry of artistic exploration and commentary.
