Instructions

In a creative tribute to the enduring legacy of the Bic Cristal ballpoint pen, Italian design house Seletti has launched a distinctive lighting collection. This series transforms the familiar writing instrument into an impressive array of lamps, marking the pen's 75th year. The collection, featuring floor, pendant, and wall-mounted lights, embraces the pen's iconic aesthetic and its well-known color palette, offering a fresh perspective on a household item and demonstrating how cherished objects can inspire innovative home decor.

The Enduring Legacy of an Everyday Writing Tool

The Bic Cristal, commonly known as the Bic Biro, has maintained its status as a global phenomenon since its initial introduction. Characterized by its transparent, hexagonal barrel and distinctive cap, it has become an indispensable item for countless individuals worldwide. By 2006, its manufacturer, Société Bic, reported an astounding sales figure of over one hundred billion units, solidifying its place in history. Its cultural impact is further recognized through its inclusion in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

The genesis of this remarkable pen traces back to 1930, when Hungarian-Argentine inventor László Bíró drew inspiration from observing children playing with marbles. He noticed the wet spheres left a continuous trail, sparking the idea for a ballpoint mechanism. His inventive concept later captured the attention of French entrepreneur Marcel Bich in 1944. After acquiring the design rights, Bich leveraged advanced Swiss technology to develop a one-millimeter stainless steel ball, successfully translating Bíró's original vision into a seamlessly flowing and effortlessly usable writing tool, thus establishing its enduring functionality and widespread appeal.

Reimagining an Icon: From Writing to Luminous Art

Seletti's art director, Stefano Seletti, expressed the brand's philosophy of incorporating memory-driven design into their creations. He articulated that the 'Bic Lamp' project exemplifies this approach by converting a universally recognizable and deeply ingrained memory object into something entirely novel and contemporary. This transformation highlights how familiar forms can be reinterpreted to evoke personal connections while serving new purposes within modern living spaces.

The recently unveiled 'Bic Lamp' collection meticulously scales up the original pen's design by a factor of 12. This collection comprises various lighting solutions, including floor, pendant, and wall lamps, all designed to reflect the pen's most iconic colors: black, red, and blue. This range perfectly encapsulates Seletti's signature pop aesthetic, where the brand skillfully merges everyday items with fresh creative energy and innovative concepts. The collection stands as a testament to how iconic designs can be revitalized, providing both illumination and a sense of nostalgia to contemporary homes.
