Africa's Ambitious Sahel Restoration: The Great Green Wall Initiative

In Africa, the Great Green Wall of the Sahara, launched by the African Union in 2007, seeks to establish an 8,000-kilometer-wide ecological belt across the continent's Sahel region. This semi-arid zone, extending from Senegal to Djibouti, is plagued by persistent droughts, food shortages, and conflicts leading to significant migration. Initially envisioned as a continuous tree barrier to halt desert expansion, the project has evolved into a holistic ecological strategy. It now focuses on restoring degraded landscapes, boosting agricultural productivity, and strengthening rural livelihoods. The ambitious goal is to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land by 2030, simultaneously fostering employment, ensuring food security, and enhancing climate resilience. The African Great Green Wall is a multifaceted undertaking employing various ecological restoration techniques adapted to local environmental conditions. These include assisted natural regeneration, agroforestry, water-harvesting systems, dune stabilization, and the strategic planting of native species, all coupled with sustainable land management practices. Implementation involves a diverse array of national agencies, local communities, and international partners, creating a mosaic of interventions across the vast Sahel region. While progress is uneven, countries like Senegal, Niger, and Ethiopia have reported substantial restoration achievements. However, ongoing challenges persist, particularly concerning water availability, maintaining forest quality, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of plantations in arid environments, all with the overarching aim of mitigating soil erosion.

China's Extensive Green Shield: The Three-North Shelterbelt Program

China's parallel initiative, the Three-North Shelterbelt Program (TNSP), dates back to 1978. This long-term ecological restoration project addresses desertification, soil erosion, and wind erosion across the northeast, north, and northwest regions of the country. Scheduled to continue until 2050 through successive phases, the program will ultimately cover approximately 4 million square kilometers across 13 provincial-level regions. Unlike the African model, the TNSP did not begin as a continuous forest. Instead, it focused on establishing an extensive network of shelterbelts, restoring existing forests and grasslands, and implementing other ecological interventions. These measures are designed to stabilize landscapes, protect agricultural lands, and enhance ecological resilience within the Gobi Desert region. The project has now entered its sixth phase (2021–2030), underpinned by updated national planning that places a greater emphasis on native vegetation, comprehensive ecological monitoring, and landscape-scale planning.

Despite facing distinct territorial, social, and political landscapes, both the African and Chinese Great Green Wall projects remain steadfast in their commitment to restoration targets and economic benefits, cementing their status as some of the world's most significant landscape restoration initiatives. Other notable global rewilding and restoration projects highlight a broader trend towards ecological recovery. These include SLA's design for the public spaces and streetscapes of Toronto's new 39.8-hectare waterfront community, "Ookwemin Minising," located in the Port Lands. In Paris, Parc de la Villette is undergoing a major transformation, integrating a new urban farm with restored biodiversity as part of a climate change adaptation strategy for the 55.5-hectare park. Similarly, in Budapest, a team led by French architecture practice Coldefy, alongside CITYFÖRSTER, Sporaarchitects, TREIBHAUS.LAND, and Marko & Placemakers, won a competition to design a masterplan for Rákosrendező, transforming a brownfield site into a rewilded urban district, demonstrating a global commitment to ecological revitalization.
