Google has been diligently working on a document backup feature for nearly a year, previously known as "Downloads" backup. The early signs of this capability emerged on the Google Play Services beta earlier in the current month, indicating an imminent wider release. After a few weeks, this functionality has now been officially launched to the public.
How to Activate Document Backup on Your Android Device
This new document backup option is being progressively introduced to Android smartphones through the stable release of Google Play Services version 26.26. Owners of Pixel phones can verify its availability by navigating to Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Backup. Here, the "Documents" option will be visible, positioned between "Photos & videos" and "Other device data," as reported by 9to5Google.
Understanding the Backup Toggle and Storage Implications
The toggle for "Back up documents" is initially deactivated by default. Upon activation, the system will display the available storage capacity in Google Drive. Users are also provided with direct options to free up existing space or purchase additional storage directly from this interface. It is important to note that any documents saved using this method will contribute to your Google Drive storage quota.
Exploring the New Backup Folder and Supported File Types
Once the feature is fully enabled, a new folder named "Android backups" will appear within "My Drive." Inside this primary folder, another sub-folder, named after your specific phone, will contain the backed-up files. The service supports a broad spectrum of document types, including, as discovered, APK files from the phone's Downloads folder, alongside common formats such as zip files, .DOC, .PPT, .PDF, and .XLS, among others.
Key Considerations Regarding Document Management and Syncing
Users should be aware that deactivating the "Documents backup" feature will not result in the removal of already uploaded content from Google Drive. Furthermore, there is currently no automatic synchronization for files, meaning that modifications made to a document in one location will not be automatically reflected in its backed-up version. Nevertheless, this backup capability offers immediate access to crucial documents from your phone's Downloads folder, even if your device is not physically present with you.

Google has taken a considerable amount of time to deploy this specific backup feature. Initial indications of its development emerged as early as August of the previous year. Subsequently, Google officially confirmed its existence in February as part of a Play system update, before gradually appearing in a Play Services beta version this month, leading up to its current widespread release.
