A recent investigation has brought to light the extensive deterioration of ancient rock carvings in Murujuga, located on Western Australia's Burrup Peninsula, attributing the damage primarily to airborne industrial contaminants. This region boasts one of the globe's most substantial collections of ancient petroglyphs, some dating back as far as 50,000 years, depicting a rich tapestry of animal life, spiritual figures, and ancestral narratives.
For several decades, since the 1950s, Murujuga has transformed into a significant industrial zone within Western Australia, hosting a large fertilizer production facility and numerous gas processing plants. Projections indicate that the world's most expansive urea manufacturing complex is set to commence operations in the coming year, further intensifying industrial activity in the vicinity.
The Rock Art Monitoring Report, a collaborative effort spanning three years involving indigenous language groups from the peninsula and a scientific contingent from Curtin University, concluded that the petroglyphs situated in closer proximity to industrial sites exhibited an accelerated rate of decay. The primary culprit identified for this degradation was sulfur dioxide emissions, resulting from the combustion of various fuels. These emissions have led to observable alterations in the rock's porous structure, indicating a direct correlation between industrial output and the artwork's decline.
Lead scientist Ben Mullins noted that historical sulfur levels from transport and shipping fuels were considerably higher in the 1970s and 1980s, although they have seen a significant reduction since 2010. This historical context suggests that past industrial practices have contributed to the current state of the rock art's erosion. The release of this report coincides with significant policy decisions, including the federal Environment Minister Murray Watt's approval for the North West Shelf gas project to continue until 2070, and Murujuga's recent designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Belinda Churnside, a director and cultural adviser for the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation (MAC), emphasized the enhanced confidence derived from the monitoring program, which is crucial for gathering evidence to safeguard the rock art and the entire cultural landscape over the long term. She highlighted that the World Heritage recognition brings with it new responsibilities for all stakeholders. MAC remains committed to collaborating with governmental bodies, industrial partners, scientists, and community elders to ensure the enduring protection and careful stewardship of Murujuga’s exceptional cultural assets for future generations.
While a memorandum of understanding exists between the MAC and the state government to secure funding for the area's ongoing monitoring beyond 2026, the finalization of these negotiations is still pending.
