In Portland, Maine's historic Munjoy Hill district, a 19th-century residence underwent a thoughtful transformation, guided by the design expertise of Insides Studio's Kacee Witherbee and Juliana Barton. The central inspiration for this revamp was a rich collection of family treasures, passed down through generations, ranging from a beloved needlepoint rug to an antique cabinet and a rooster weathervane. What began as a kitchen refresh evolved into a comprehensive renovation, encompassing a new full bathroom, custom millwork, and the conversion of a former parlor into a library. Each design choice was meticulously crafted to honor these cherished mementos, seamlessly weaving them into the home's updated aesthetic.
The 3,000-square-foot house presented a myriad of historical quirks, including an unconventional arrangement of doorways, a bulky kitchen chimney, and remnants of previous layouts. Rather than viewing these as limitations, Witherbee and Barton embraced them as unique opportunities. A formerly impractical pass-through, for instance, was reimagined as a dynamic, open pantry, showcasing the family's dishware, antique molds, children's artwork, and cookbook collection. This innovative approach allowed the home's distinctive character to shine through, creating spaces that were both functional and deeply personal.
The playroom, a favorite updated space for the homeowners, exemplifies this creative problem-solving. Despite its inherent eccentricities like superfluous doorways and an open area beneath the stairs, the designers brought order and charm. Custom cabinets were installed to discreetly store toys, a small desk provided a dedicated space for schoolwork, and East London Cloth café curtains softened the natural light. This intentional design transformed a potentially chaotic area into a cozy and organized environment that still maintained a playful spirit, connecting fluidly to the adjacent living room.
Similarly, the living room posed its own challenges with the placement of a piano and a fireplace. The designers artfully integrated these elements, creating a custom banquette within the bay window to serve as a inviting reading nook. Throughout the residence, a nuanced use of textiles brought depth and warmth, with bespoke oilcloth rugs and pantry skirts made from unique fabrics. Richly patterned materials were selected for pillows and curtains, adding vibrant touches to the primary bedroom and children's rooms. The family's own cherished items, from the piano to various chairs and a needlepoint rug, found their rightful place, contributing to the home's evolving narrative.
