A Thoughtful Architectural Approach in a Densely Populated Neighborhood
Architect Kenta Hirayama embarked on a mission to craft an understated yet remarkable residence within Tokyo's bustling Setagaya Ward. The 'House in Kinuta' stands as a testament to thoughtful design, featuring a minimalist gabled roof and a striking metal facade. This detached family home is meticulously designed to maximize natural illumination while ensuring optimal privacy, a critical consideration in Tokyo's tightly packed urban landscape.
Innovative Material Choices and Enduring Design Principles
The 145-square-meter dwelling is constructed with a structural framework of cedar and pine, enveloped in galvalume steel. This material was chosen for its low maintenance, cost-effectiveness, and widespread use in Japanese residential construction, providing a contemporary aesthetic that also blends with the traditional architecture of the area. Hirayama emphasized the creation of a building that felt like a natural extension of its environment, respecting the nearby older homes and large pine trees.
Strategic Window Placement for Enhanced Natural Light
To address the challenge of balancing natural light with privacy, Hirayama incorporated select, generously sized windows throughout the home. This strategic placement ensures that the interior is bathed in daylight without compromising the occupants' sense of seclusion from neighboring properties. The innovative use of a small roof extension above the entrance, crafted from steel panels, adds both a practical element—protection from rain—and an angular decorative detail.
Versatile Interior Spaces: Atelier and Open-Plan Living
The ground floor of the residence is home to a double-height atelier, specifically designed to accommodate the client's artistic pursuits. The bedroom is thoughtfully positioned on the south side, recessed from the street to enhance light exposure and create a buffer from the adjacent house. The first floor boasts an expansive open-plan area that seamlessly integrates the living, dining, and kitchen spaces, further illuminated by a large bay window and custom lighting solutions.
Harmonious Interior Palette: Wood and Subtle Hues
In stark contrast to its steel-clad exterior, the interior of the 'House in Kinuta' exudes warmth through the extensive use of pale natural wood for flooring, wall panels, and custom furniture. Hirayama's choice of a neutral white for walls and ceilings, subtly mixed with grey, contributes to a serene and cohesive aesthetic.
