KOKUYO, a prominent manufacturer of office furnishings and supplies, has reimagined its Tokyo headquarters, creating a unique space that seamlessly blends traditional work environments with an innovative learning center. This new office, known as KOKUYO DIG, spans 5,317 square feet and was developed in collaboration with DDAA, aiming to cultivate an atmosphere of imaginative and collaborative learning.
Departing from conventional corporate designs, the KOKUYO DIG office adopts a novel approach inspired by the vibrant and focused energy found in family restaurants. In Japan, such establishments are known for allowing individuals to engage in personal activities while comfortably surrounded by others. The design team sought to replicate this dynamic, creating an environment where employees can execute their tasks and also actively participate in knowledge-sharing.
The office is structured across two distinct levels. The upper floor features a communal area, facilitating open interaction and collaboration. Conversely, the lower level is segmented into more secluded zones, providing privacy for various group activities. A subtle yet intentional design element is the gradual increase in fixture heights and sightlines, moving from the office's central area towards the back. This thoughtful arrangement enhances both the aesthetic flow and functional use of the space.
Lush plant installations serve a dual purpose, acting as natural partitions that offer a sense of privacy while integrating organic elements into the interior. The color palette, predominantly featuring green tones in both furniture and flooring, further complements these botanical accents, infusing the office with a vibrant, natural energy that promotes a calming yet stimulating atmosphere.
The main work area is equipped with a diverse array of tables and seating options, catering to a wide spectrum of work preferences and tasks. Employees can choose from various setups, from areas suitable for focused individual work to comfortable sofa-style seating ideal for informal discussions and meetings. Additionally, large, lower-height tables provide ample space for multiple groups to work concurrently, accommodating documents and accessories with ease.
Emphasis is placed on effortless movement and clear sightlines throughout the office, with key destinations strategically distributed across both floors. The first level houses a dedicated library, offering resources for research and quiet study. The second floor features a snack bar and a supply dock, ensuring convenience and accessibility for employees. Pathways organically extend from these central points, with furniture thoughtfully arranged to optimize floor space and encourage smooth transitions between different areas.
