Lotus recently confirmed plans for the Type 135 Esprit, a mid-engine hybrid supercar slated for a 2028 debut. This new model is projected to feature a powerful V8 hybrid system and potentially a V6 variant, which will be supplied by Horse, a collaboration between Geely and Renault specializing in combustion engine components. The ambitious goal for this vehicle is to achieve a curb weight under 1.5 tons while delivering more than 1,000 horsepower.
During an investor call, CEO Feng Qingfeng elaborated on the challenges of meeting such stringent weight targets, especially with an 800V architecture, hybrid system, V8 engine, and electric motor integrated into the design. Lotus aims to mitigate this by incorporating Formula 1-derived motor technology, significantly reducing the weight of electric motors. For instance, a typical 150-kilowatt motor, usually weighing around 209 pounds, is being re-engineered to approximately 44 pounds. This innovation is crucial for achieving the desired power-to-weight ratio. The Type 135 is designed to fill the performance void between the Emira sports car and the all-electric Evija hypercar, aligning with Lotus's broader Focus 2030 strategy, which advocates for a diverse lineup including combustion, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric models.
