Max Mourmouras, a dedicated merchant marine from Biddeford, Maine, habitually dedicates his time to fishing when not at sea. Known for his solo expeditions for bluefin tuna, Mourmouras, operating his 32-foot vessel “Retreviah” near Saco Bay, encountered an unprecedented challenge on August 21. While targeting tuna ten miles offshore in 200 feet of water, a colossal swordfish seized his bait, intended for tuna. This unexpected catch quickly transformed into a two-hour battle against the powerful marine creature, an experience he described as unforgettable after witnessing the fish leap from the ocean.
The intense struggle to subdue the swordfish required Mourmouras to adapt his usual tactics. He skillfully detached his boat from its anchor to pursue the agile fish, navigating through the waters while maintaining control over his heavy-duty fishing gear. Unlike tuna, the swordfish remained close to the surface, presenting a unique challenge. After an initial harpooning attempt that failed, Mourmouras persisted for another thirty minutes before successfully securing the fish with a second harpoon, which functioned similarly to a flying gaff used for other large game fish. With the swordfish finally secured by a dart line, a tail rope, and his fishing line, he enlisted the help of his friend, Tim O’Brien, who was nearby tuna fishing.
With O'Brien's assistance, Mourmouras successfully brought the massive 529-pound swordfish aboard the “Retreviah.” He then transported his monumental catch to Norwoods Marina in Saco, where officials from Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries were present to inspect the rare shallow-water catch. Mourmouras has since submitted an application for what could be Maine's first-ever swordfish caught by rod and reel. The fish's impressive size was evident, with its tail alone measuring approximately four feet from tip to tip, leading Mourmouras to consider preserving its head and bill as a lasting memento of his remarkable angling achievement.
