Massproductions and LAYERED Unveil the Cord Collection

Rugs are experiencing a significant resurgence as a medium for innovative and unconstrained design. Far from being mere afterthoughts, these refined floor coverings are now recognized as powerful canvases for both artistic representation and abstract expression. Over the past year, both established brands and emerging designers have launched numerous collections that elevate this once-secondary home accessory to a prominent focal point within any interior space.

Leading this exciting wave of exploration is Massproductions, a Stockholm-based design studio celebrated for its focused and clear approach. This studio, which draws inspiration from industrial processes while embracing traditional craftsmanship, has partnered with LAYERED, a boutique rug manufacturer, to create the new Cord Collection. This collection delves into the core principles of rug-making, emphasizing the fundamental logic of construction through four unique handwoven designs. These pieces highlight the intrinsic beauty and practicality of weaving—the meticulous crisscrossing of fibers to create a durable yet adaptable planar form.

The Cord Collection was unveiled during this year's 3daysofdesign, featuring an engaging installation that utilized spinning columns adorned with loose cords. This dynamic display, reminiscent of large industrial car-wash brushes, effectively showcased the rugs' versatility and resilience. Available in distinct colorways such as Black White, Blue Brown, Rust, and Yellow Oatmeal, the Cord Collection features a prominent stripe seamlessly integrated into its foundational structure. This design choice transforms the typically two-dimensional medium into a visibly and tangibly three-dimensional experience. The co-principals of Massproductions, Magnus Elebäck and Chris Martin, intentionally designed this collection to highlight the subtle interplay between precise industrial methods and the delicate, authentic imperfections of human artistry. They aimed to evoke a deeper appreciation for the ingenuity embedded in the crafting process itself. Martin elaborated on this vision, stating, “Our goal was to foster a dialogue between the organic and the man-made. By juxtaposing a subdued, natural wool base with a bold, contrasting accent color, we achieved a harmonious balance of the natural and the contemporary. The incorporation of a coarser yarn for the stripe adds a quiet dimensionality, giving the two-dimensional weave a palpable presence.”

This innovative approach raises an important question: why do more products not overtly reflect and physically embody the cleverness inherent in their creation? The Cord Collection serves as a compelling example of how products can tell a story of their making, adding layers of meaning and appreciation for both the material and the meticulous process behind them. This commitment to showcasing the "logic of weaving" transforms a functional item into an object of contemplation and admiration, enriching the living environment with both beauty and a narrative of human ingenuity.
