Mavis Tire has successfully acquired the automotive service and tire business of Pep Boys from Icahn Enterprises in a $700 million cash transaction. This deal, initially announced in July and finalized on August 20, 2026, establishes a dominant force in the North American independent tire and auto service industry, now overseeing a combined network exceeding 4,400 outlets.
For motorists, this acquisition signifies a unified corporate ownership managing two prominent brands. Pep Boys, a long-standing establishment since 1921, now operates under the same corporate umbrella as Mavis, a company that has steadily expanded its market presence and operational scale through a series of regional tire shop acquisitions over the years.
The agreement is structured as a stock purchase, transferring Pep Boys' operational assets related to service and tires to a Mavis affiliate. Icahn Enterprises, however, retains ownership of the real estate associated with Pep Boys locations, along with other franchise holdings like AAMCO Transmissions and Precision Tune Auto Care. This strategic focus targets the service infrastructure rather than the physical properties.
"This announcement marks a significant milestone in Mavis's ongoing growth strategy," stated David Sorbaro, co-CEO of Mavis, emphasizing the acquisition as a key step in their expansion across North America. Although the deal is pending final regulatory approval, the day-to-day operations at individual Pep Boys or Mavis outlets are expected to continue without immediate changes. Any adjustments in pricing, staffing, store layouts, or digital tools will be implemented progressively following the completion of regulatory reviews and the official transfer of operations.
Pep Boys is set to maintain its presence in retail environments, with the joint announcement confirming that the brand will preserve its identity within the Mavis portfolio. This indicates that the familiar Pep Boys signage will remain, even as corporate decisions transition to the new ownership. Carl Icahn, who acquired Pep Boys in 2016, highlighted the benefits of consolidation, citing anticipated economies of scale and leveraging Mavis's extensive expertise in the service sector.
This consolidation within the automotive service industry reflects a broader trend toward market optimization and expanded geographical reach. For consumers, the key will be to remain vigilant, comparing various service options, warranty conditions, and parts sourcing to ensure continued value and quality in their automotive care decisions. This merger, while promising enhanced efficiencies for the companies involved, underscores the importance of informed choices for individual vehicle owners and fleet operators alike.
