Mental Resilience Boosts Athletic Success and Overall Well-being

Instructions

A recent doctoral study conducted by Lis Johles at Karlstad University emphasizes the significant connection between psychological flexibility and both athletic achievement and mental well-being. This research explores how an athlete's capacity to navigate difficult thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations while maintaining alignment with their objectives and principles is crucial for success.

The study's findings indicate that athletes demonstrating greater psychological flexibility not only achieve superior performance but also report an enhanced quality of life. The research involved a diverse group of elite athletes, including both seasoned professionals and high school competitors across various sports such as football, ice hockey, handball, floorball, basketball, and cross-country skiing. A notable outcome of this research was the creation of a novel assessment tool, the Psychological Flexibility in Sport Scale (PFSS), designed to specifically measure psychological flexibility within athletic contexts. Furthermore, the thesis investigated the impact of mindfulness practices, like body scanning, on reducing anxiety and improving sleep quality among athletes. While both body scanning and traditional relaxation techniques showed some effectiveness in alleviating anxiety symptoms, neither proved significantly superior in addressing anxiety or sleep disturbances in high school athletes.

Cultivating psychological flexibility is vital for athletes as it empowers them to continue striving towards their goals despite internal struggles. This ability allows them to process negative thoughts and emotions without letting them dictate their actions, thereby sustaining focus on performance. For coaches and elite athletes, integrating mental resilience training and relaxation techniques into their regular routines can foster better mental health and mitigate issues such as anxiety and sleep problems, ultimately leading to more consistent performance and a healthier athletic career.
