Mitsubishi's top-selling Outlander and Outlander PHEV models are currently under a recall order impacting tens of thousands of units from the 2025 and 2026 production years. The core problem lies with a software glitch that can cause the rearview camera system to fail, rendering it non-compliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard #111 for Rear Visibility. This issue has been observed across various automakers, with many pointing to Bosch as the common supplier of the camera equipment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted the potential for increased crash risks and pedestrian injuries due to the camera's malfunction.
Despite the large number of vehicles involved in the recall, it's estimated that only about one percent are genuinely affected by the defect. The majority of these are traditional combustion engine models, with plug-in hybrids representing a smaller portion. The identified flaw involves "improper software programming" within the Alliance In-Vehicle Infotainment system, which can manifest as system boot failures, freezing, unexpected restarts, or a complete black screen. This software issue has been a persistent challenge for Mitsubishi, initially reported through field reports from Canada describing intermittent unresponsiveness in the 12.3-inch touchscreen displays.
Mitsubishi launched an investigation into the issue in October 2025 and, after extensive analysis, confirmed software programming problems that necessitated a non-compliance recall. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified starting later this month, with dealers receiving prior notice to prepare for the necessary software updates. Vehicles manufactured after July 28, 2026, have already received the updated software.
