MVRDV Unveils Urban Revivo Flagship: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity in Beijing

In a compelling architectural endeavor, the Dutch studio MVRDV has crafted a striking flagship store for Chinese fashion giant Urban Revivo in Beijing's prominent Sanlitun shopping district. This innovative retail space, which spans 4,120 square meters, is strategically situated along a key pedestrian artery, connecting the trendy, youthful southern part of the district with the upscale northern section known for luxury brands.

The store's facade is a marvel of contemporary design, inspired by the distinctive roof tiles of traditional Beijing residences. It comprises an intricate arrangement of suspended aluminum tiles and tubes, each subtly engraved with Urban Revivo's logo. A series of seven circular openings, reminiscent of classic Chinese moon gates, punctuate the facade, serving as both grand entrances and captivating window displays. These openings feature protruding tiles and tubes, creating a dynamic, three-dimensional wave-like effect. The facade is adorned in Urban Revivo's signature blue, treated with a dichroic coating that allows its hue to transition from purple to blue, depending on the viewer's perspective.

Internally, the store continues this theme of cultural dialogue. The ground floor welcomes visitors through circular gateways, echoing the exterior's moon gate motif. As one ascends through the four retail levels, the openings progressively morph into modern forms, from elegant arches on the first floor to rounded rectangles on the second, culminating in an inverted curve on the top floor. The interiors feature muted grey bricks, a deliberate nod to Beijing's historic Hutong alleyways, providing a neutral yet resonant backdrop. Each floor offers a distinct ambiance, with the first floor exuding youthful energy through reflective surfaces and vibrant blue furnishings, while the second floor adopts a more refined palette for mature shoppers. The uppermost floor, designed for an intimate shopping experience, is adorned with sumptuous velvet and cobalt blue upholstery.

Further enhancing the shopping journey are six uniquely designed "Bold Rooms" dedicated to special collections. These include the cozy Soft Room with upholstered walls, the playful Playful Room featuring recycled fabric display blocks, the reflective Urban Room, and the Daring Room showcasing products in wooden boxes. The Unexpected Room, with its adaptable fabric curtains, and the Avant Garde Room, displaying items in glass cases along the building's atriums, complete this immersive retail experience. As Jacob van Rijs, founding partner at MVRDV, articulated, the project successfully marries local influences with global aspirations, evolving with the visitor's journey and seamlessly blending traditional references with modern techniques.

The Urban Revivo flagship store stands as a vibrant example of how architecture can narrate a brand's identity while honoring and reinterpreting local heritage. It creates a space that is not only commercially effective but also culturally resonant, engaging shoppers in a multi-layered experience. This project adds to Sanlitun's growing reputation as an architectural showcase, where cutting-edge design meets rich historical context, inviting other brands and designers to explore similar innovative approaches in retail architecture.
