OpenAI has decided to reinstate a five-hour usage restriction on its ChatGPT Work and Codex services for users subscribed to the ChatGPT Plus plan. This policy adjustment, effective August 25, follows a period where these restrictions had been temporarily lifted, aiming to improve the management of the company's computational infrastructure.
Thibault Sottiaux, a key figure at OpenAI overseeing Codex and ChatGPT, formally announced this change via an update on X. He clarified that the reintroduction of these time constraints is primarily a strategic move to manage system resources more efficiently, thereby enabling OpenAI to sustain its generous weekly usage allowances for its subscriber base. Plus subscribers will now experience their weekly quota distributed within these five-hour windows, necessitating a waiting period for a reset once the limit is reached.
Sottiaux further explained that the decision targets 'casual' and 'new' Plus users who frequently overstep their weekly allocations, leading to confusion. The new five-hour framework is anticipated to assist these users in better moderating their weekly interactions with the platform. While the reinstated limits currently apply exclusively to ChatGPT Plus accounts, those on the more advanced ChatGPT Pro plans—costing $100 or $200—remain exempt, facing only weekly usage caps. However, Sottiaux's announcement suggested that similar hourly restrictions might be introduced for Pro accounts within a few months, indicating a broader strategy to standardize resource allocation across different subscription tiers.
This strategic decision by OpenAI underscores a commitment to equitable resource distribution and operational stability, ensuring a sustainable and fair service environment for its expanding user community. By proactively managing computational demands, OpenAI strives to uphold a high standard of accessibility and performance for its cutting-edge AI technologies.
