Onley's Triumph: A Resilient Comeback Story in Professional Cycling
Oscar Onley's Breakthrough Performance at Vuelta a Burgos
Oscar Onley, representing Netcompany-Ineos, dramatically claimed victory in the second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. The 23-year-old cyclist surged past a strong field of contenders, including seasoned riders Giulio Ciccone from Lidl-Trek and Enric Mas of Movistar, in a decisive sprint finish atop the Valle de Sol climb. This win is not only his first with his new team but also places him in the coveted leader's jersey for the remainder of the ProTour event, with three stages yet to unfold.
A Season of Setbacks and Steadfast Determination
Onley's path to this victory has been anything but smooth. Since joining Ineos at the start of the year, his season has been plagued by illness and injuries, significantly disrupting his race calendar. A particularly unfortunate crash during the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in June forced his withdrawal from the Tour de France, where he had previously achieved an impressive fourth-place overall finish in 2025. Despite these challenges, his talent shone through earlier in the year with a second-place finish at the Volta ao Algarve in February, setting the stage for his recent triumph—only the third career victory for the young Scot.
Reflections from the Victor: Relief and Renewed Purpose
Following his win, a visibly emotional Onley shared his feelings of satisfaction and relief. He acknowledged the difficulties of his season, stating, "This hasn't been a good season for me so far; I've had a lot of setbacks and just not really got going, so I really wanted to come here, and the goal wasn't even to win, it was just to get some racing in the legs, to be honest." He emphasized the importance of repaying his team's unwavering support: "It was nice to be able to pay back the team, because they've fully supported me this whole year. Obviously being a new rider in the team, I wanted to show that I belonged here so it's quite a big relief." Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in his current form, noting, "I guess today I showed that I have good legs, so we'll look at where I am on GC – I lost a bit of time yesterday but so did a lot of other GC guys – there's still a lot of racing to come."
British Success Continues at Vuelta a Burgos
Onley's win contributes to a remarkable display of British cycling talent at the Vuelta a Burgos, a crucial warm-up race for the Vuelta a España. His victory follows closely on the heels of fellow Briton Matthew Brennan (Visma-Lease a Bike), who secured a win in a reduced bunch sprint on stage one in Burgos. Brennan also shared his elation, commenting on his win, "Happy, but also quite relieved. I think there's been a lot of hard work, and especially today, the team really showed they believed in me so that was really good to see and I'm really happy it paid off."
